Quebec premier says Ottawa should forcibly relocate half of asylum seekers
During his visit to Paris, Premier François Legault emphasized immigration as a key issue, urging the federal government to mandate the relocation of half the asylum seekers currently in Quebec to other provinces, including those already settled in the province. He expressed the need for tangible results and suggested creating waiting zones for asylum seekers, akin to a system in France. Legault plans to discuss this further with French Prime Minister Michel Barnier. However, his demands have faced criticism from federal Immigration Minister Marc Miller, who labeled them "inhumane" and accused Legault of politicizing immigration, stating that the federal government cannot compel people to relocate.

Calgarian hopes donation of blood pressure kits for pregnant women saves lives
A Calgary woman is trying to help identify early warning signs of a life-threatening pregnancy complication, with the hope other families don't face the same tragic outcome hers did.
Jillian Young's daughter, Cara Kernohan, died suddenly when she was 35 weeks pregnant, due to HELLP syndrome, a potentially fatal hypertensive disorder involving the blood and liver. Young is partnering with a local obstetrician to provide 250 blood pressure cuff kits to pregnant women in Calgary, to help them monitor for a range of serious hypertensive disorders, including HELLP syndrome and pre-eclampsia, during pregnancy.

Chinese-made EVs are now subject to a 100% tariff. What does this mean for Canadians?
Canada's new tariff on electric vehicles from China will reverberate through a multitude of industries and could lead to repercussions well beyond the electric vehicle market, according to analysts.
The 100 per cent tariff on imports of Chinese-made EVs (and some hybrids), including cars, buses, trucks and delivery vehicles, takes effect on Tuesday after a 30-day consultation period over the summer. A 25 per cent surtax on steel and aluminum imports from China will kick in on Oct. 15.
While the move is meant to keep cheap, well-made electric cars from China at bay in order to grow and protect Canada's nascent EV sector, critics warn there could be a number of consequences, including to environmental goals and other Canadian sectors as a trade war looms.

'The hurt is still there,' survivors say as Canada marks National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
Canada observed the fourth National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, honoring the tragic legacy of residential schools and the children who never returned home. Thousands gathered in Ottawa to hear from First Nations, Métis, and Inuit survivors, with performers and participants in orange shirts commemorating past injustices. A "memorial cloth" bearing the names of some of the 150,000 students was shared among attendees, who also placed children's shoes around the stage to honor those lost. Gordon Burnstick, a survivor, spoke about his traumatic experience at St. Martin's Mission, sharing the lasting impact it had on his life. Now sober, he advocates for healing and remembrance, emphasizing the importance of continuing these gatherings until all children are accounted for.

Canada marks 4th annual National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
Canada marks the fourth annual National Day for Truth and Reconciliation today. The day is a time to remember Indigenous children who died at residential schools, the survivors, their families and communities. Also known as Orange Shirt Day, it takes place Sept. 30 each year and is a federal statutory holiday.
More than 150,000 First Nations, Métis and Inuit children were forced to attend church-run, government-funded residential schools between the 1870s and 1997. The National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation estimated that more than 4,100 children died while attending the schools.

These kids learn from the forest, as their teacher aims to weave climate education into more lessons
Whether it's the horsetail found in the nearby forest or changing polar bear habitats, Grade 4 student Nora Gemmiti has enjoyed the climate-related lessons she's been learning at school.
"You're learning something new and then you know how to take care of this world in a better way," said the nine-year-old student in Millbrook, Ont., east of Toronto.
"This is helping me respect the Earth more because when you learn about plants or animals ... close to being extinct, then you can learn how to change that or do different things to stop it."
Elementary teacher Wilma Armstrong spearheaded these new lessons for her school, inspired by a recent professional development course on climate education.
"There's just so much misunderstanding about climate change and children have so many questions. It gave me confidence to find a way in," said the 20-year teaching veteran.

Superbugs could kill 39 million people by 2050. Here's what Canadian survivors, doctors say should change
Melissa Murray, a Toronto woman and former avid runner, faced a life-threatening bacterial infection that led to sepsis and nearly resulted in the loss of her leg. Last summer, she experienced septic shock, which severely impacted her heart and kidneys, prompting urgent surgery to remove half of her calf muscle and part of her thigh. Murray described the excruciating pain as feeling like a "campfire" in her leg.
Her infection was caused by antibiotic-resistant Group A strep bacteria, which standard antibiotics could not treat. Doctors are unsure how she contracted the infection, which could have stemmed from a minor skin nick. Antibiotic resistance is recognized as a significant global health threat, prompting calls from world leaders for urgent action to address this issue.

Ottawa reserving commercial airline seats to get Canadians out of Lebanon
The federal government has started booking blocks of seats on commercial flights to help Canadians get out of Lebanon. "Canada has secured seats for Canadians on the limited commercial flights available. If a seat is available, please take it," Global Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly posted to X, formerly Twitter. "Canadians need to leave now."
Officials from Global Affairs Canada (GAC) told Radio-Canada the government took this step because commercial flights out of the country are becoming scarce as Israel's military action against what it calls Hezbollah targets in Lebanon continues.

'My world stopped': What it's like to learn you have cancer from a message on your phone
When Beth Marchant opened the email announcing that her ultrasound results were ready, the then-32-year-old was floored to discover it contained a breast cancer diagnosis.
"I saw the word carcinoma," Marchant said in an interview in her home in Cambridge, Ont. "In an email — that's not how you want to find out that you have stage 3 breast cancer."
Jénnelle Johnson — also in her 30s — had a similar experience when she created her account on MyChart, one of the most widely used patient data apps in Canada.
"I logged in … and then that's when I saw 'invasive ductal carcinoma,'" said Johnson, who lives in Hamilton, Ont. "My world stopped."
As more Canadians get online access to the results of their medical tests, what Johnson and Marchant went through reveals an emerging concern: people learning about a life-changing diagnosis on a screen, without a doctor there to explain it — and sometimes alone.

Push to map Great Lakes bottom gains momentum amid promises effort will help fishing and shipping
What lies beneath the Great Lakes' waves is largely unknown, but there's a new push to learn more about thousands of shipwrecks, underwater infrastructure and the impacts of climate change on the bottom of the world's largest freshwater system.
Only 15 per cent of the lakes' bottom has been mapped, according to the Great Lakes Observing System (GLOS). The organization has been pushing since 2018 to secure funding to map the entire lakebed in high-resolution.
Advocates argue the effort would paint a detailed picture of shipwrecks, infrastructure such as pipelines and topography that would inform storm surge models as the climate warms.
Jennifer Boehme grew up scouting beaches around her home in St. Petersburg, Fla., for whatever she could find. Rocks, sand dollars, coquina mollusks — anything the ocean gave up.
Now, 40 years later, Boehme wants to launch another treasure hunt. She's the executive director of GLOS.

Aamjiwnaang First Nation evacuations begin as Ineos starts removing toxic chemical
The Aamjiwnaang First Nation near Sarnia, Ontario, declared a state of emergency in April due to high benzene levels, prompting health concerns among residents experiencing symptoms like headaches and nausea. With the neighboring company Ineos Styrolution starting to remove benzene from a tank, the band council advised around 100 residents to evacuate temporarily. Benzene exposure is linked to cancer, and high air levels led to the Ontario government revoking the company's environmental approval. Chief Janelle Nahmabin emphasized the community's ongoing struggles with environmental health, especially following Truth and Reconciliation Day. Ineos stated that any increased emissions during the removal process would be localized and safe, stressing its commitment to community safety.

Residential school survivors press Ottawa for more money to find unmarked graves
A group of residential school survivors and their supporters are asking the federal government to reverse what they're calling a funding cut and come up with more money to help find the unmarked graves of students who went to these institutions.
The request comes the same day Canada marks the fourth annual National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, established in 2021 to honour the survivors of residential schools, and the children who never came home from them.
The Survivors' Secretariat, which is parsing through decades-old records and searching the grounds of the former Mohawk Institute near Brantford, Ont., is leading the charge against a series of changes that Ottawa announced earlier this year that it says will reduce the total pool of money available to Indigenous communities to document residential school atrocities and deaths.

A lithium battery fire sent toxic gas over Montreal. Are we ready for such emergencies?
Residents, chemists and firefighters are raising concerns about prevention and emergency preparedness after 15,000 kilograms of lithium batteries inside a shipping container caught fire at the Port of Montreal on Monday.
"Around 6 p.m., I started smelling something chemical in my place," said Lia Chauvel, who lives about two kilometres from the port. "Like at 7 p.m., I get a text from the city. I thought it was spam."
The fire started at 2:40 p.m. About two hours later, the city issued a precautionary lockdown notice through landlines to some nearby residents. A reminder alert was sent at 6:51 p.m.
At 6:53 p.m., the Mercier—Hochelaga-Maisonneuve borough posted a warning on Facebook, and the comment section quickly filled with residents saying they were never notified or didn't see the post until much later.
Meanwhile, about 100 people were evacuated from the area near the fire, but there was no mandatory evacuation order, according to city spokesperson Camille Bégin.

Family of man who died in RCMP chase say he's not 'just another dead Indian at the hands of the police'
The family of Joseph Desjarlais, a 34-year-old Indigenous man who died following an RCMP chase in Saskatchewan, is seeking answers after his death. Desjarlais was found injured in a van after police fired shots during the pursuit on Fishing Lake First Nation. His mother, Yvette Desjarlais, expressed deep grief and highlighted the love and support from their community, emphasizing that her son was a human being, not defined by his mistakes. She is demanding details about the circumstances of his death, including how many times he was shot.
Yvette's daughter, Cheyenne Desjarlais, shared fond memories of her brother, noting his role as a loving father and his efforts to teach her children about hunting in a culturally respectful way. She criticized the police's readiness to use force and called for a healing of relations between the RCMP and their community, asserting that her brother will not be seen as just another victim of police violence. This incident marks the third death of an Indigenous man involving police in Saskatchewan in less than a month.

Ontario extends contract to jail migrants for another year
Ontario will continue to imprison foreign nationals held for immigration purposes despite promising to end the practice, Radio-Canada has learned. Human rights advocates and immigration lawyers have for years campaigned against the imprisonment of migrants in Canada, which they say violates international law.
They believed their efforts had borne fruit when, beginning in 2022, all 10 provinces agreed they would no longer incarcerate migrants on behalf of the federal government and gave Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) one year's notice, as required by some of their contracts.
