Paleontologists unearth giant skull of Pachyrhinosaurus in northern Alberta
It's a dinosaur that roamed Alberta's badlands more than 70 million years ago, sporting a big, bumpy, bony head the size of a baby elephant.
On Wednesday, paleontologists near Grande Prairie pulled its 272-kilogram skull from the ground.
They call it "Big Sam."
The adult Pachyrhinosaurus is the second plant-eating dinosaur to be unearthed from a dense bonebed belonging to a herd that died together on the edge of a valley that now sits 450 kilometres northwest of Edmonton.
It didn't die alone.
"We have hundreds of juvenile bones in the bonebed, so we know that there are many babies and some adults among all of the big adults," Emily Bamforth, a paleontologist with the nearby Philip J. Currie Dinosaur Museum, said in an interview on the way to the dig site.

2 Canadians killed in Lebanon amid fighting between Israel, Hezbollah
Ottawa is aware of two Canadians who have died in Lebanon, amid hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah. Global Affairs Canada said late Tuesday that it had been "informed of the deaths of two Canadian citizens." Few details were immediately available, including the timing of the deaths.
Global Affairs Canada also said it has received a request for consular assistance for injuries sustained recently in the attacks between Israel and its northern neighbour. The news came after an Israeli airstrike on Beirut killed a senior Hezbollah commander and as cross-border rocket attacks by both sides increased fears of a broader war in the Middle East.

Melting sea ice, disappearing high-fat food sources mean trouble for Hudson Bay polar bears
Biologist Geoff York, research director at Polar Bear International, highlights the alarming decline of polar bears in the western Hudson Bay, where their population has dropped to about 600—half of what it was 40 years ago. Climate change is causing the region to experience earlier sea ice melt and warmer waters, threatening not just polar bears but the entire Arctic ecosystem. Changes in sea ice affect the growth of algae, which disrupts the food web from plankton to fish, and ultimately impacts species like beluga whales and seals. York notes that the ecosystem is shifting toward a southern open ocean environment, leading to a decline in nutritious, high-fat food sources essential for Arctic wildlife. Marine mammal scientist Kristin Laidre emphasizes that survival in the Arctic requires fat, making the changes even more critical for these species.

Dog attacks spiked since pandemic, new Ottawa stats show
The number of reported dog attacks in Ottawa has risen by 50 per cent since the pandemic, and that has one city councillor suggesting stricter bylaw controls.
Ottawa By-law and Regulatory Services received 562 reports involving aggressive dogs in 2020. That increased to 654 in 2021, 715 in 2022 and 845 in 2023 — a really concerning jump to Coun. Glen Gower. Dogs have bitten, scratched and lunged at people and behaved aggressively toward other animals, according to the city. The number of reports includes all complaints, whether they were substantiated or not, and may include duplicates, the city said.

Concerns for fish after burned Kamloops, B.C., bridge collapses
Experts are raising concerns that the destruction of Kamloops' historic Red Bridge, which collapsed into the South Thompson River during a fire, could have an impact on fish populations.
Jason Hwang, vice-president of salmon programs at the Vancouver-based Pacific Salmon Foundation, said debris from the wooden truss bridge, which fell into the river on Thursday, could disrupt fish migration, particularly salmon returning to spawn in the fall.
"It's a time of year when they're coming through and using that spot in big numbers," Hwang told CBC News. "Fish and the whole aquatic ecosystem are sensitive, especially to things that come off of fires with all kinds of chemicals like creosote."
This year, concerns about salmon have intensified, given reports of declining sockeye populations in the region. The Pacific Salmon Commission recently noted that higher than average water temperatures and obstructions from the July 31 landslide in the Chilcotin River have already complicated salmon migration this season.

The balance of power in Ottawa has shifted to the Bloc. So what does it want?
Bloc Québécois Leader Yves-François Blanchet has positioned his party to leverage a $16 billion piece of legislation following the termination of the NDP-Liberal confidence and supply agreement. He claims that the political landscape has shifted back in favor of Quebec's interests and intends to use this momentum to either secure benefits for Quebec or potentially see the Trudeau government fall.
The Bloc's top demand is Bill C-319, which aims to increase the full pension amount for seniors by 10% and raise the employment income exemption for the guaranteed income supplement from $5,000 to $6,500. Blanchet also aims to use Bill C-282, which seeks to strengthen protections for Canada’s supply management system, as a bargaining tool. He believes these issues could lead to significant gains in the coming weeks, and if not addressed, the government could face serious consequences.

Businesses face new limits on temporary foreign worker program
Starting today, employers in Canada will face new restrictions on their hiring of low-wage temporary foreign workers — a policy shift the federal government says will push businesses to make a greater effort to hire workers already in Canada.
Under the new restrictions:
➡️Employers will be limited to hiring 10 per cent of their workforce through the program's low-wage stream.
➡️Employers will be unable to hire through this program if they are in census metropolitan areas with unemployment rates of more than six per cent.
➡️Contracts for low-wage positions will be generally be limited to one year.

Paleontologists unearth giant skull of Pachyrhinosaurus in northern Alberta
Paleontologists near Grande Prairie have unearthed a massive 272-kilogram skull of a Pachyrhinosaurus, nicknamed "Big Sam," which lived over 70 million years ago. This dinosaur, part of a herd found in a dense bonebed, is notable for its distinctive bumpy head, comparable in size to a baby elephant. The site, discovered nearly 50 years ago by a high school teacher, is one of the densest dinosaur bonebeds in North America, containing hundreds of bones per square meter.
Emily Bamforth from the Philip J. Currie Dinosaur Museum described Pachyrhinosaurus as a smaller cousin of the triceratops, unique to the Grande Prairie area. The extraction of Big Sam was challenging due to its entanglement with around 300 other bones. The skull, found upside down and well preserved, was carefully lifted with a crane and is set to be studied at the museum. Bamforth expressed excitement, noting this extraction as one of the largest she has undertaken.

Air Canada union head says she'll resign if pilots reject deal
Charlene Hudy, head of the Air Canada pilots union, announced she will resign if members reject a tentative agreement with the airline. The contract, reached after over a year of negotiations, offers a nearly 42% salary increase over four years for the airline's 5,400 pilots, surpassing recent gains by U.S. airlines. Despite the significant raise, some pilots, particularly newer recruits, are concerned about persistent pay disparities compared to experienced colleagues.
Hudy emphasized that a rejection of the deal would indicate she no longer represents the pilots. The proposed agreement reduces the initial pay gap for new hires from four years to two but maintains lower wages in years three and four compared to the fifth year, when pay significantly increases.
Many of the pilots currently earn entry-level wages due to recent hiring surges, often coming from other airlines. Other considerations for the ratification vote will include scheduling and work-life balance, especially as many pilots are balancing family responsibilities. The vote is expected in the coming weeks.

Election campaign period officially begins in B.C.
Saturday marks the official start of the B.C. election period, as writs will start being issued ahead of voting day on Oct. 19.
B.C.'s provincial election period begins when the province's lieutenant-governor, on the advice of the premier, dissolves the legislature and issues orders to begin the official election campaign.
The chief electoral officer will then issue writs — official documents, issued in the name of the King, that state an election is underway — to each of the province's 93 ridings, some of which have been changed from the previous election.
While pre-election campaigning has been happening since late July, the official election campaign beginning Saturday will mean B.C. residents are likely to start seeing more lawn signs and more large events.

Toronto District School Board under fire after field trip to downtown protest
Ontario's largest school board is under fire after students at several schools were taken on a field trip where they appear to have ended up taking part in a protest held in downtown Toronto. Students at a number of Toronto District School Board schools were given permission to head to a day of action for the people of Grassy Narrows First Nation on Wednesday, whose community river was impacted by years of mercury poisoning.
The board said a trip to view a protest by Grassy Narrows that had promised to attract thousands outside Queen's Park was "an educational experience for students to hear from Indigenous voices about the ongoing challenges faced by the people of Grassy Narrows." Some parents and other groups, however, complained the trip veered away from education and into protest and activism.
