अनन्याश्चिन्तयन्तो मां ये जना: पर्युपासते।
तेषां नित्याभियुक्तानां योगक्षेमं वहाम्यहम्॥ २२॥

जो अनन्य भक्त मेरा चिन्तन करते हुए (मेरी) भलीभाँति  उपासना करते हैं, (मुझमें) निरन्तर  लगे हुए  उन भक्तोंका योगक्षेम (अप्राप्त- की प्राप्ति और प्राप्तकी रक्षा) मैं वहन करता हूँ।

The devotees, however, who loving no one else constantly think of Me, and worship Me in a disinterested spirit, to those ever united in thought with Me, I bring full security and personally attend to their needs. (9:22)

त्रैविद्या मां सोमपा: पूतपापा-यज्ञैरिष्ट्वा स्वर्गतिं प्रार्थयन्ते।
ते पुण्यमासाद्य सुरेन्द्रलोक-मश्नन्ति दिव्यान्दिवि देवभोगान्॥ २०॥

तीनों वेदोंमें कहे  हुए सकाम अनुष्ठान-को करनेवाले (और) सोमरसको पीनेवाले (जो)पापरहित मनुष्य यज्ञोंके द्वारा (इन्द्ररूपसे) मेरा पूजन करके स्वर्ग-प्राप्तिकी प्रार्थना करते हैं, वे (पुण्योंके  फलस्वरूप) पवित्र इन्द्रलोकको प्राप्त करके (वहाँ) स्वर्गके दिव्यान्,  देवताओंके दिव्य भोगोंको भोगते हैं।

Those who perform action with some interested motive as laid down in these three Vedas and drink the sap of the Soma plant, and have thus been purged of sin, worshipping Me through sacrifices, seek access to heaven; attaining Indra's paradise as the result of their virtuous deeds, they enjoy the celestial pleasures of gods in heaven. (9:20)

अहं क्रतुरहं यज्ञ: स्वधाहमहमौषधम्।
मन्त्रोऽहमहमेवाज्यमहमग्निरहं हुतम्॥ १६॥

पिताहमस्य जगतो माता धाता पितामह:।
वेद्यं पवित्रमोङ्कार ऋक्साम यजुरेव च॥ १७॥

गतिर्भर्ता प्रभु: साक्षी निवास: शरणं सुहृत्।
प्रभव: प्रलय: स्थानं निधानं बीजमव्ययम्॥ १८॥


क्रतु मैं हूँ, यज्ञ मैं हूँ, स्वधा मैं हूँ, औषध मैं हूँ, मन्त्र मैं हूँ, घृत मैं हूँ, अग्नि मैं हूँ (और) हवनरूप क्रिया भी मैं हूँ। जाननेयोग्य पवित्र ओंकार, ऋग्वेद, सामवेद और यजुर्वेद भी मैं ही हूँ। इस सम्पूर्ण जगत्का पिता, धाता, माता, पितामह, गति, भर्ता, प्रभु, साक्षी, निवास, आश्रय, सुहृद्, उत्पत्ति, प्रलय, स्थान, निधान (भण्डार) (तथा) अविनाशी बीज (भी मैं ही हूँ)।

I am the Vedic ritual, I am the sacrifice, I am the offering to the departed; I am the herbage and foodgrains; I am the sacred mantra, I am the clarified butter, I am the sacred fire, and I am verily the act of offering oblations into the fire. (9:16)

I am the sustainer and ruler of this universe, its father, mother and grandfather, the one worth knowing, the purifier, the sacred syllable OM, and the three Vedas Rk, Yajus and Sama. (9:17)

I am the supreme goal, sustainer, lord, witness, abode, refuge, well-wisher seeking no return, origin and end, resting-place, store-house to which all
beings return at the time of universal destruction, and the imperishable seed. (9:18)

सततं कीर्तयन्तो मां यतन्तश्च दृढव्रता:।
नमस्यन्तश्च मां भक्त्या नित्ययुक्ता उपासते॥ १४॥

नित्य-निरन्तर (मुझमें) लगे हुए मनुष्य दृढव्रती होकर लगनपूर्वक साधनमें लगे हुए और प्रेमपूर्वक कीर्तन करते हुए तथा मुझे नमस्कार करते हुए निरन्तर मेरी उपासना करते हैं।

Constantly chanting My names and glories and striving for My realization, and bowing again and again to Me, those devotees of firm resolve, ever united with me through meditation, worship Me with single-minded devotion. (9:14)

(जो) आसुरी, राक्षसी और मोहिनी प्रकृतिका ही आश्रय लेते हैं, ऐसे अविवेकी मनुष्योंकी सब आशाएँ व्यर्थ होती हैं, सब शुभकर्म व्यर्थ होते हैं (और) सब ज्ञान व्यर्थ होते हैं। 

Those bewildered persons with vain hopes, futile actions and fruitless knowledge have embraced a fiendish, demoniacal and delusive nature. (9:12)

मयाध्यक्षेण प्रकृति: सूयते सचराचरम्।
हेतुनानेन कौन्तेय जगद्विपरिवर्तते॥ १०॥

प्रकृति मेरी अध्यक्षतामें चराचरसहित सम्पूर्ण  जगत्की रचना करती है। हे कुन्तीनन्दन! इसी हेतुसे जगत्का (विविध  प्रकारसे) परिवर्तन होता है।

Arjuna, under My aegis, Nature brings forth the whole creation, consisting of both sentient and insentient beings; it is due to this cause that the wheel of Samsara is going round. (9:10)

Wielding My Nature I procreate, again and again (according to their respective Karmas) all this multitude of beings subject to the influence of their own nature. (9:8)

जैसे सब जगह  विचरनेवाली महान् वायु नित्य ही आकाशमें स्थित स्थित:रहती है, ऐसे ही सम्पूर्ण प्राणी मुझमें ही स्थित हैं— ऐसा तुम मान लो।

Just as the extensive air, which is moving everywhere, (being born of ether) ever remains in ether, likewise know that all beings, who have originated from My Sankalpa, abide in Me. (9:6)

हे परन्तप! इस धर्मकी महिमापर श्रद्धा न रखनेवाले मनुष्य मुझे प्राप्त न होकर मृत्युरूप वत्र्मनि संसारके मार्गमें लौटते रहते हैं अर्थात् बार-बार जन्मते-मरते रहते हैं।

Arjuna, people having no faith in this Dharma, failing to reach Me, continue to revolve in the path of the world of birth and death. (9:3)

इदं तु ते गुह्यतमं प्रवक्ष्याम्यनसूयवे।
ज्ञानं विज्ञानसहितं यज्ज्ञात्वा मोक्ष्यसेऽशुभात्॥ १॥

श्रीभगवान् बोले— यह अत्यन्त गोपनीय विज्ञानसहित ज्ञान दोषदृष्टिरहित तेरे लिये तो (मैं फिर) अच्छी तरहसे कहूँगा, जिसको जानकर (तू) अशुभसे अर्थात्  जन्म-मरणरूप  संसारसे मुक्त हो जायगा।

Sri Bhagavan said : To you, who are devoid of the carping spirit, I shall now unfold the most secret knowledge of Nirguna Brahma along with the knowledge of manifest Divinity, knowing which you shall be free from the evil of worldly existence. (9:1)

अत्येति तत्सर्वमिदं विदित्वा योगी परं स्थानमुपैति चाद्यम्॥ २८॥

योगी (भक्त) इसको (इस अध्यायमें वर्णित विषयको) जानकर वेदोंमें, यज्ञोंमें, तपोंमें तथा दानमें जो-जो पुण्यफल कहे गये हैं, उन सभी पुण्यफलोंका अतिक्रमण कर जाता है और आदिस्थान परमात्माको प्राप्त हो जाता है।

The Yogi, realizing this profound truth,
doubtless transcends all the rewards enumerated for the study of the Vedas as well as for the performance of sacrifices, austerities and charities, and attains the supreme and primal state. (8:28)

शुक्लकृष्णे गती ह्येते जगत: शाश्वते मते।
एकया यात्यनावृत्तिमन्ययावर्तते पुन:॥ २६॥

क्योंकि शुक्ल और कृष्ण— ये दोनों गतियाँ अनादिकालसे जगत्-(प्राणिमात्र-) के साथ (सम्बन्ध रखनेवाली) मानी गयी हैं। (इनमेंसे) एक गतिमें जानेवालेको लौटना नहीं पड़ता (और) दूसरी गतिमें जानेवालेको  पुन: लौटना पड़ता है।

For these two paths of the world, the bright and the dark, are considered to be eternal. Proceeding by one of them, one reaches the supreme state from which there is no return; and proceeding by the other, one returns to the mortal world, i.e., becomes subject to birth and death once more. (8:26)

अग्निज्र्योतिरह: शुक्ल: षण्मासा उत्तरायणम्।
तत्र प्रयाता गच्छन्ति ब्रह्म ब्रह्मविदो जना:॥ २४॥

जिस मार्गमें— प्रकाशस्वरूप अग्निका अधिपति देवता, दिनका अधिपति देवता, शुक्लपक्षका अधिपति देवता, (और) छ: महीनोंवाले  उत्तरायणका अधिपति देवता है, उस मार्गसे (शरीर छोडक़र) गये हुए ब्रह्मवेत्ता पुरुष (पहले ब्रह्मलोकको प्राप्त होकर पीछे ब्रह्माके साथ) ब्रह्मको प्राप्त हो जाते हैं।

(Of the two paths) the one is that in which are stationed the all-effulgent fire-god and the deities presiding over daylight, the bright fortnight, and the six months of the northward course of the sun respectively; proceeding along it after death Yogis, who have known Brahma, being successively led by the above gods, finally reach Brahma. (8:24)

यस्यान्त:स्थानि भूतानि येन सर्वमिदं ततम्॥ २२॥

हे पृथानन्दन अर्जुन! सम्पूर्ण प्राणी जिसके अन्तर्गत हैं (और) जिससे यह सम्पूर्ण संसार व्याप्त है, वह परम पुरुष परमात्मा तो अनन्य भक्तिसे प्राप्त होनेयोग्य है।

Arjuna, that eternal unmanifest supreme Purusa in whom all beings reside and by whom all this is pervaded, is attainable only through exclusive Devotion. (8:22)

परस्तस्मात्तु भावोऽन्योऽव्यक्तोऽव्यक्तात्सनातन:।
य: स सर्वेषु भूतेषु नश्यत्सु न विनश्यति॥ २०॥

परन्तु उस अव्यक्त-(ब्रह्माके सूक्ष्मशरीर-) से अन्य (विलक्षण) अनादि अत्यन्त श्रेष्ठ भावरूप जो अव्यक्त (ईश्वर) है, वह सम्पूर्ण प्राणियोंके नष्ट होनेपर भी नष्ट नहीं होता।

Far beyond even this unmanifest, there is yet another unmanifest Existence, that Supreme Divine Person, who does not perish even though all beings perish. (8:20)

ते तं भुक्त्वा स्वर्गलोकं विशालं-
क्षीणे पुण्ये मत्र्यलोकं विशन्ति।
एवं त्रयीधर्ममनुप्रपन्ना-
गतागतं कामकामा लभन्ते॥ २१॥

वे उस विशाल स्वर्गलोकके (भोगोंको) भोगकर पुण्य क्षीण होनेपर मृत्युलोकमें आ जाते हैं। इस प्रकार तीनों वेदोंमें कहे हुए सकाम धर्मका आश्रय लिये हुए भोगोंकी कामना करनेवाले मनुष्य आवागमनको प्राप्त होते हैं।

Having enjoyed the extensive heaven -world, they return to this world of mortals on the stock of their merits being exhausted. Thus devoted to the ritual with interested motive, recommended by the three Vedas as the means of attaining heavenly bliss, and seeking worldly enjoyments, they repeatedly come and go (i.e., ascend to heaven by virtue of their merits and return to earth when their fruit has been enjoyed). (9:21)

अमृतं चैव मृत्युश्च सदसच्चाहमर्जुन॥ १९॥

हे अर्जुन! (संसारके हितके लिये) मैं (ही) सूर्यरूपसे तपता हूँ, मैं (ही) जलको ग्रहण करता हूँ और (फिर उस जलको) (मैं ही) वर्षारूपसे बरसा देता हूँ। (और तो क्या कहूँ) अमृत और मृत्यु तथा सत् और असत् (भी) मैं ही हूँ।

I radiate heat as the sun, and hold back as well as send forth showers, Arjuna. I am immortality as well as death; even so, I am being and also non-being. (9:19)

ज्ञानयज्ञेन चाप्यन्ये यजन्तो मामुपासते।
एकत्वेन पृथक्त्वेन बहुधा विश्वतोमुखम्॥ १५॥

दूसरे साधक ज्ञानयज्ञके द्वारा एकीभावसे  (अभेदभावसे)  मेरा पूजन करते हुए मेरी उपासना  करते हैं   और दूसरे भी कई साधक (अपनेको) पृथक् मानकर चारों तरफ मुखवाले मेरे विराटरुपकी अर्थात् संसारको मेरा विराटरुप मानकर सेव्य सेवकभावसे (मेरी) अनेक प्रकारसे (उपासना करते हैं)।

Others, who follow the path of Knowledge, betake themselves to Me through Yajna of Knowledge, worshipping Me in My absolute, formless aspect as one with themselves; while still others worship Me in My Universal Form in many ways, taking Me to be diverse in manifold celestial forms. (9:15)

महात्मानस्तु मां पार्थ दैवीं प्रकृतिमाश्रिता:।
भजन्त्यनन्यमनसो ज्ञात्वा भूतादिमव्ययम्॥ १३॥

परन्तु हे पृथानन्दन! दैवी प्रकृतिके आश्रित अनन्यमनवाले महात्मालोग मुझे सम्पूर्ण प्राणियोंका आदि (और) अविनाशी समझकर (मेरा) भजन करते हैं।

On the other hand, Arjuna, great souls who have adopted the divine nature, knowing Me as the prime source of all beings and the imperishable, eternal, worship Me constantly with one pointedness of mind. (9:13)

अवजानन्ति मां मूढा मानुषीं तनुमाश्रितम्।
परं भावमजानन्तो मम भूतमहेश्वरम्॥ ११॥

मूर्खलोग मेरे सम्पूर्ण  प्राणियोंके महान् ईश्वररूप श्रेष्ठभावको न जानते हुए मुझे मानुषीम्,  मनुष्यशरीरके आश्रित मानकर अर्थात् साधारण  मनुष्य मानकर (मेरी) अवज्ञा  करते हैं।

Not Knowing My supreme nature, fools deride Me, the Overlord of the entire creation, who have assumed the human form. That is to say, they take Me, who have appeared in human form through My Yogamaya for deliverance of the world, as an ordinary mortal. (9:11)

हे धनंजय! उन (सृष्टि-रचना  आदि) कर्मोंमें अनासक्त और उदासीनकी तरह रहते हुए मुझे वे कर्म नहीं बाँधते।

Arjuna, those actions, however, do not bind Me, unattached as I am to such actions and standing apart, as it were. (9:9)

हे कुन्तीनन्दन! कल्पोंका क्षय होनेपर (महाप्रलय-के समय) सम्पूर्ण प्राणी मेरी प्रकृतिको प्राप्त होते हैं (और) कल्पोंके आदिमें (महासर्गके समय) मैं फिर उनकी रचना करता हूँ।

Arjuna, during the Final Dissolution all beings enter My Prakrati (the prime cause), and at the beginning of creation, I send them forth again. (9:7)

मया ततमिदं सर्वं जगदव्यक्तमूर्तिना।
मत्स्थानि सर्वभूतानि न चाहं तेष्ववस्थित:॥ ४॥

न च मत्स्थानि भूतानि पश्य मे योगमैश्वरम्।
भूतभृन्न च भूतस्थो ममात्मा भूतभावन:॥ ५॥

यह सब संसार मेरे निराकार स्वरूपसे व्याप्त है।सम्पूर्ण  प्राणी मुझमें स्थित हैं; परन्तु मैं उनमें स्थित नहीं हूँ तथा (वे) प्राणी (भी) मुझमें स्थित नहीं हैं— मेरे (इस) ईश्वर-सम्बन्धी योग-(सामथ्र्य-) को देख। सम्पूर्ण प्राणियोंको  उत्पन्न करनेवाला और प्राणियोंका धारण, भरण-पोषण करनेवाला मेरा स्वरूप उन प्राणियोंमें स्थित नहीं है।

The whole of this universe is permeated by Me as unmanifest Divinity, and all beings dwell on the idea within Me. But really speaking, I am not present in them. (9:4)

Nay, all those beings abide not in Me; but behold the wonderful power of My divine Yoga; though the Sustainer and Creator of beings, Myself in reality dwell not in those beings. (9:5)

राजविद्या राजगुह्यं पवित्रमिदमुत्तमम्।
प्रत्यक्षावगमं धम्र्यं सुसुखं कर्तुमव्ययम्॥ २॥

यह (विज्ञानसहित ज्ञान अर्थात्  समग्ररूप) सम्पूर्ण विद्याओंका राजा (और) सम्पूर्ण गोपनीयोंका राजा है। यह अति पवित्र  (तथा) अतिश्रेष्ठ है (और) इसका फल भी  प्रत्यक्ष है। यह धर्ममय है, अविनाशी है (और) करनेमें बहुत सुगम है अर्थात् इसको प्राप्त करना बहुत सुगम है।

This knowledge (of both the Nirguna and Saguna aspects of Divinity) is a sovereign science, a sovereign secret, supremely holy, most excellent, directly enjoyable, attended with virtue, very easy to practise and imperishable. (9:2)

Thus, in the Upanishad sung by the Lord, the Science of Brahma, the scripture of Yoga, the dialogue between Sri Krishna and Arjuna, ends the eighth chapter entitled 'The Yoga of the Indestructible Brahma.'

तस्मात्सर्वेषु कालेषु योगयुक्तो भवार्जुन ।।२७।।

हे पृथानन्दन! इन दोनों मार्गोंको जाननेवाला कोई भी योगी मोहित नहीं होता। अत: हे अर्जुन! (तू) सब समयमें योगयुक्त (समतामें स्थित) हो जा।

Knowing thus the secret of these two paths, O son of Kunti, no Yogi gets deluded. Therefore, Arjuna, at all times be steadfast in Yoga in the form of equanimity (i.e., strive constantly for My realization). (8:27)

धूमो रात्रिस्तथा कृष्ण: षण्मासा दक्षिणायनम्।
तत्र चान्द्रमसं ज्योतिर्योगी प्राप्य निवर्तते॥ २५॥

जिस मार्गमें— धूमका अधिपति देवता, रात्रिका अधिपति देवता, कृष्णपक्षका अधिपति देवता और छ: महीनोंवाले दक्षिणायनका अधिपति देवता है, (शरीर छोडक़र) उस मार्गसे गया हुआ योगी (सकाम मनुष्य) चन्द्रमाकी ज्योतिको प्राप्त होकर लौट आता है अर्थात् जन्म-मरणको प्राप्त होता है।

The other path is that wherein are stationed the gods presiding over smoke, night, the dark fortnight, and the six months of the southward course of the sun; the Yogi (devoted to action with an interested motive) taking to this path after death is led by the above gods, one after another, and attaining the lustre of the moon (and enjoying the fruit of his meritorious deeds in heaven) returns to this mortal world. (8:25)

यत्र काले त्वनावृत्तिमावृत्तिं चैव योगिन:।
प्रयाता यान्ति तं कालं वक्ष्यामि भरतर्षभ॥ २३॥

परन्तु हे भरतवंशियोंमें श्रेष्ठ अर्जुन! जिस काल अर्थात् मार्गमें शरीर छोडक़र गये हुए योगी अनावृत्तिको प्राप्त होते हैं अर्थात् पीछे  लौटकर नहीं आते और (जिस मार्गमें गये हुए) आवृत्तिको प्राप्त होते हैं अर्थात् पीछे लौटकर आते हैं, उस कालको अर्थात् दोनों मार्गोंको मैं कहूँगा।

Arjuna, I shall now tell you the time (path)departing when Yogis do not return, and also the time (path) departing when they do return. (8:23)

अव्यक्तोऽक्षर इत्युक्तस्तमाहु: परमां गतिम्।
यं प्राप्य न निवर्तन्ते तद्धाम परमं मम॥ २१॥

उसीको अव्यक्त (और) अक्षर— ऐसा कहा गया है (तथा उसीको) परम गति कहा गया है (और) जिसको प्राप्त होनेपर (जीव) फिर लौटकर (संसारमें) नहीं आते, वह मेरा परम धाम है।

The same unmanifest which has been spoken of as the Indestructible is also called the supreme Goal; that again is My supreme Abode, attaining which they return not to this mortal world. (8:21)

भूतग्राम: स एवायं भूत्वा भूत्वा प्रलीयते।
रात्र्यागमेऽवश: पार्थ प्रभवत्यहरागमे॥ १९॥

हे पार्थ! वही यह प्राणिसमुदाय उत्पन्न हो-होकर प्रकृतिके परवश हुआ ब्रह्माके दिनके समय उत्पन्न होता है (और) ब्रह्माकी रात्रिके समय लीन होता है।

Arjuna, this multitude of beings, being born again and again, is dissolved under compulsion of its nature at the coming of the cosmic night, and rises again at the commencement of the cosmic day. (8:19)
