Aravind J K:
🍀🍀🍀Keep your Dream🍀🍀🍀. I have a friend named Monty Roberts who owns a horse ranch in San Ysidro. He has let me use his house to put on fund-raising events to raise money for youth at risk programs.

The last time I was there he introduced me by saying:

“I want to tell you why I let Jack use my horse. It all goes back to a story about a young man who was the son of an itinerant horse trainer who would go from stable to stable, race track to race track, farm to farm and ranch to ranch, training horses. As a result, the boy’s high school career was continually interrupted. When he was a senior, he was asked to write a paper about what he wanted to be and do when he grew up.”

“That night he wrote a seven-page paper describing his goal of someday owning a horse ranch. He wrote about his dream in great detail and he even drew a diagram of a 200-acre ranch, showing the location of all the buildings, the stables and the track. Then he drew a detailed floor plan for a 4,000-square-foot house that would sit on a 200-acre dream ranch.”

“He put a great deal of his heart into the project and the next day he handed it in to his teacher. Two days later he received his paper back. On the front page was a large red F with a note that read, See me after class.’”

“The boy with the dream went to see the teacher after class and asked, Why did I receive an F?’”

“The teacher said, This is an unrealistic dream for a young boy like you. You have no money. You come from an itinerant family. You have no resources. Owning a horse ranch requires a lot of money. You have to buy the land. You have to pay for the original breeding stock and later you’ll have to pay large stud fees. There’s no way you could ever do it.’ Then the teacher added, If you will rewrite this paper with a more realistic goal, I will reconsider your grade.’”

“The boy went home and thought about it long and hard. He asked his father what he should do. His father said, `Look, son, you have to make up your own mind on this. However, I think it is a very important decision for you.’ Finally, after sitting with it for a week, the boy turned in the same paper, making no changes at all.

He stated, ‘You can keep the F and I’ll keep my dream.’”

Monty then turned to the assembled group and said, “I tell you this story because you are sitting in my 4,000-square-foot house in the middle of my 200-acre horse ranch. I still have that school paper framed over the fireplace.”

He added, “The best part of the story is that two summers ago that same schoolteacher brought 30 kids to camp out on my ranch for a week. When the teacher was leaving, the teacher said, ‘Look, Monty, I can tell you this now. When I was your teacher, I was something of a dream stealer. During those years I stole a lot of kids’ dreams. Fortunately you had enough gumption not to give up on yours.’”

“Don’t let anyone steal your dreams. Follow your heart, no matter what.”

🌱🌱🌱Be Socratic🌱🌱🌱
“Judge a man by his questions rather than his answers.” Voltaire
I’ve always said that engineering taught me one thing, how to solve problems. I can see now how this is only partially true. While I learned a lot about analytical thinking, there were some big gaps. For example, I never learned Socratic questioning.

Looking back, I can only imagine the solutions I would have discovered if I had this skill. Socratic questioning fuels critical thinking.

R.W. Paul describes six types of questions. Regardless of the problem, these questions can help me come up with better solutions.

🌹Get clear about the situation: Ask, why do you say that or how does this relate to our discussion
🌹Test assumptions to find facts: Ask, what could we assume instead? How can you verify or disapprove an assumption?
🌹Find examples of truth: Ask, what would be an example? What is this like? What do you think causes that to happen?
🌹Look at the problem from a different angle: Ask, what would be an alternative? What is another way to look at it? Can you explain why it is necessary or beneficial, and who benefits?
🌹Think about the results of actions: Ask, What are the consequences of that assumption? What are you implying? How does X affect Y?
🌹Question the question: What was the point of this question? What does X mean?

🌱🌱🌱Find solutions, not problems🌱🌱🌱
“Complaining about a problem without proposing a solution is called whining.” Teddy Roosevelt
When I was young, I was quick to bring my issues to my family, teachers or friends. Why go through the work of solving them if someone else will step in and help out?

The problem with this early approach is that nine times out of ten I could have solved the problem myself. Every time someone did the work for me, I missed a chance to learn.

As I got older, I realized I had to work as hard at solving problems as I did on finding them. The more I did that, the more I realized how much joy I got from cracking the code on some tough ones.

In my professional life, I’ve been an intern, a CEO and everything between the two. With each move up the corporate ladder, there were fewer and fewer people to solve the hard problems.

Few issues start in the CEO’s office, but a lot end up there. The reason is simple. Someone in the company couldn’t figure out a solution. This happens at every level of an organization. Tons of problems end up in a manager’s lap because the team couldn’t solve them.

In any company, there are two types of employees. They are either problem finders or problem solvers. This second group goes by a lot of other names, fixers, resourceful, go-to-person or troubleshooter. The second group only has one name, whiners.

Problems are easy to come up, solutions are hard. I’ve found that it’s almost impossible to find a solution when I fixate on the issue. The mind can only focus on one or the other.

In life, those that find problems and offer solutions always seem to win. These people get more responsibility, opportunities and pay.

The best way I know to do this is to accept the problem and then start to focus on solutions. There is an answer somewhere, and the sooner I start looking for it, the sooner I can find it.🌹🌹🌹🌹

Drawing up a schedule like Franklin’s is a fantastic way to evaluate your day and figure out how you can take advantage of every available hour.

At first glance, Franklin’s schedule seems quite rigorous.

He woke at five in the morning and immediately began planning his day. By eight o’ clock he was busy at work on his different projects. He’d work for about four hours straight before allowing himself a pause for lunch or leisure time.

However, Franklin did admit the difficulties of following such a tight schedule. Sometimes his days didn’t always go as planned. He wrote,

“I found that, tho’ it might be practicable where a man’s business was such as to leave him the disposition of his time, that of a journeyman printer, for instance, it was not possible to be exactly observed by a master, who must mix with the world, and often receive people of business at their own hours.”
Obviously, it is important to be realistic when creating such a schedule for yourself. Often you will probably be unable to follow it to the letter. However, by having such a schedule in place, it will be much easier to develop daily habits, like a daily writing routine.

🎯👆Negativity & positivity are a matter of what you talk yourself in or out of.

Let's focus in on the word "talk" for a moment, in the reference to "internal dialogue".

The duration and repetition by which you carry on a negative or positive conversation in your head drastically impacts what you see manifest in your life.

If you think and ponder negativity, you can not possibly expect to squeeze an ounce of positivity out of what produces such putrid fruit.

However, the key is in the coaching. The bad news is that you've coached yourself into thinking negative, but the good news is that you can coach yourself right back out of that and into thinking positive.

You have EVERY ability AND responsibility to control your internal dialogue.

If you're tired of being depressed, worried, and drenched with anxiety, you have to become that much MORE sick of negative thinking.

Coach yourself out of Negativity!

Good morning & Have A
Great day ahead ! 💪🏻💐

A good fisherman goes out of his way to bait his hook with what the fish prefer — which might not be a bad tip for those who wish to succeed in human relationships.

Just as in a conversation it’s a good idea to listen more than you talk, it is also wise in relationships to think about the well-being of others more than you think about your own wishes and desires. When you constantly strive to treat others in the same way you would like them to treat you, you become a person whom others like to be around, one who commands their respect, confidence, and loyalty. When you learn to manage emotions and your ego, and when you learn to always consider the needs and desires of others, it is inevitable that you will “bait your hook” with kindness and consideration, and catch more friends than you can count

REAL PEOPLE DON'T HAVE TO PROVE ANYTHING TO ANYBODY: "Real People"

DIGEST: Pay attention to perfecting your craft, and becoming whoever it is that you desire to become!

You alone are enough you have nothing to prove to anybody. -Maya Angelou

When people truly know who they are, they don't have to continually prove it to people over and over again. In my experiences, when talking to people who only talk about their own merits, and the things that they feel they have done in their lives, it later comes out that huge parts of their lives aren't really as great as they would have liked for you to believe.

Real people recognize that they don't have to prove anything to anybody but their own selves, and they make their moves in life from this belief.

Nobody can dream for you, and no one can take away any hope or dream that you have inside of you.

So instead of paying attention to what everyone else is doing, and what everyone thinks of what you are doing, pay attention to the tasks at hand.

Pay attention to perfecting your craft, and becoming whoever it is that you desire to become!

Moral Stories

Rose for Mother

A man stopped at a flower shop to order some flowers to be wired to his mother who lived two hundred miles away. As he got out of his car he noticed a young girl sitting on the curb sobbing. He asked her what was wrong and she replied, “I wanted to buy a red rose for my mother. But I only have seventy-five cents, and a rose costs two dollars.”

The man smiled and said, “Come on in with me. I’ll buy you a rose.” He bought the little girl her rose and ordered his own mother’s flowers. As they were leaving he offered the girl a ride home. She said, “Yes, please! You can take me to my mother.” She directed him to a cemetery, where she placed the rose on a freshly dug grave.

The man returned to the flower shop, canceled the wire order, picked up a bouquet and drove the two hundred miles to his mother’s house.

Moral: Life is Short.  Spend much time as you can loving and caring people who love you.  Enjoy each moment with them before it’s too late.  There is nothing important than family.

“One good analogy is worth three hours of discussion” Dudley Malone
An analogy suggests something similar between two different things. For example, a toe is to a foot, as a finger is to a hand.

Analogies are powerful for problem-solving because it broadens our thinking. These comparisons help us see connections that we might otherwise miss.

Leonardi Davinci was famous for this. He studied how water moved in rivers to better understand how blood flows through our veins. He dissected humans to understand how layers of muscle, tissue, and tendons work inside our body. This knowledge allowed him to paint details that no other painter considered at the time.🌹🌹🌹😀

🌱🌱🌱Avoid negative thinking🌱🌱🌱
“If you can solve your problem, then what is the need of worrying? If you cannot solve it, then what is the use of worrying?” Shantideva
I’ve never been able to solve a hard problem when I start with negative thoughts. If I say to myself “there is no solution,” I’ll never find one. If I say “this won’t work,” I’ll never pursue that angle. If I say to myself “I’m out of ideas,” I won’t come up with any new ones.

Negative thinking will defeat any problem solver before they even begin. It’s a waste of energy and time.

Part of the reason negativity creeps in is our fear of failure. Here’s the thing, failing to solve the problem is a failure. In my mind it’s always better to try to resolve the issue and fail, than never try at all.

Sure the solution may not work. If it fails, I’m still in a better place. I learned something new, and I can apply my knowledge to the next big problem I face. If it works, I continue to build my reputation of being the “go-to-guy” for big issues. I win either way.🌹🌹🌹

🌱🌱🌱Life lessons on problem solving🌱🌱🌱

Life is like a game of chess. There is an infinite number of ways to play. It’s possible to become a master but still, have room to grow. At the core, the game is about problem-solving. To be great at chess one needs to see patterns, think ahead, use logic, be creative, fail, and learn. Every move in the game is a chance to solve a problem.

This is what life feels like to me. There are thousands of moves and problems around every corner. Some are small while others seem insurmountable. I’m not in control of the issues that come my way, but I can control my response.

Often life’s problems seem overwhelming. It’s like the beginning of a chess game. There are only 32 pieces on the board, but there are over 300 Billion ways to play them in the first four moves.

When I started playing chess, I had no idea what I was doing. I struggled with every move, even the first one. Over time I began to learn a few strategies and see patterns of my own. These helped me become a better and faster player. What used to be a problem that took a few minutes to solve, now took seconds.

Problem-solving, like chess, is a skill. It’s something I can get better at over time. Every time I tackle a new problem I am improving my ability to solve one down the road.

Don’t think for a second I got it right all the time. Sure, I’ve tackled some hairy problems in my life and even came up with some good solutions. But, I always learned more from my screw ups.

I could look back and ask myself “why didn’t that work?” Did I think through all the information or were my assumptions wrong? Finding mistakes is one of the best ways I’ve found to improve my problem-solving skills.

Problems are like mutants in a fantasy movie. They always seem to evolve and get more powerful. The patterns used against a problem yesterday may not work today. After getting good at solving one type, new issues come around the bend to test every skill we have.

The only answer is to get better.🌹🌹🌹

By working at the same time each day, Franklin trained himself to be ready to work during those hours. Whenever he had a day that was free of distractions and unexpected interruptions, he would be able to work as productively as possible.

But there’s one more element of Franklin’s schedule that makes it quite unique.

How Benjamin Franklin Took His Schedule to the Next Level
First thing each morning, Franklin decided on his goals for the day and determined what his most pressing priorities were.

At the top of the schedule, he printed:

“Morning Question, What good shall I do this day?”
Before he went to sleep at night, he would look over his list, examine his day, and ask,

“What good have I done today?”
This simple practice of evaluating his day every morning and evening helped Franklin put everything into perspective.

Even if he hadn’t accomplished everything that he wanted to, he was able to spend time celebrating his victories. He could also reevaluate his schedule and see what things he needed to keep working on.

Essentially, it was a way for him to measure his progress. If his method for achieving a goal wasn’t working, he could tweak it and attempt a different approach.

How to Make A Daily Schedule That Will Help You Reach Your Goals
First, you need to plan out your goals and upcoming projects. Consider whether a goal is too vague or if you have a clear idea of what success will look like. Make sure you write down your goal in the most specific terms as possible.

Next, break your long-term goal down into smaller short-term goals. This will allow you to easily measure your progress so you can celebrate weekly and monthly victories. Plan out what you should realistically be able to accomplish by the next month or even in the next few days.

You can make your short-term goals even more specific by setting deadlines. Give yourself a clear target to work towards.

Once you’ve done that, you’re ready to put together your schedule. Analyze how you can divide up your day so you’re working productively and taking advantage of the hours that are available to you.

In today’s Internet age, there are many fantastic apps that make it incredibly easy to create a daily schedule.

Currently, I write up mine on Evernote. Every night, I look over my schedule and tweak it depending on whether I have any appointments or other events that might interfere with my usual writing routine.

Todoist is another excellent app for writing up a daily schedule. I have recently signed-up for an account there and plan to start using it in addition to Evernote.

The Todoist app lets you create to-do lists with recurring dates and times. This is perfect for customizing a daily schedule. For example, you can schedule “writing every day at 8am” or you can create tasks that only recur on specific days, e.g., “research every Friday”. This allows you to create a custom schedule for every single day.

Take Time to Review Your Progress
Of course, it’s also important to review our schedules every morning and evening like Benjamin Franklin did. I’ve even taken this one step further.

Not only do I review my schedule every morning and evening, but also on the first of every month I write up an entry in my journal outlining the short-term goals for the month. I use an app called Day One that has a simple and elegant interface.

At the end of the month, I review these goals and evaluate my progress. I can see whether my goals were realistic, whether I met them successfully, and what I need to work on in the next month.

Ultimately, by monitoring your progress as often as you can, you help keep the momentum alive. Your brain is thinking about your goals constantly and becomes excited about achieving them. This helps you establish a daily habit of working towards them.

The Takeaway
Benjamin Franklin once observed,

“Lost time is never found again.”
By implementing a daily schedule like Franklin’s, you are able to evaluate whether you are using your time effectively, and you help guard yourself against slipping into the quagmire of procrastination.

There are only a few days left of 2017, and you’re probably beginning to plan out your goals for the new year.

But let’s face it. It’s easy to set resolutions and draw up a list of goals, but it’s much more difficult putting in the hard work to achieve them.

At first, you might make significant progress towards your goals, but as the weeks pass, your schedule seems to become busier than you expected, your motivation begins to ebb, and those goals begin to look further and further out of reach.

How do you maintain that original interest and energy that motivated you during those initial stages? How do you ensure that you are working productively each day?

Here’s Benjamin Franklin’s solution to this problem.

Benjamin Franklin’s Method to Success
Benjamin Franklin was a master of the art of productivity. As a polymath, he wore many different hats during his lifetime: author, printer, entrepreneur, political theorist, politician, postmaster, scientist, inventor, and diplomat to name a few.

What was his secret to becoming so successful?

Undoubtedly, a lot of it was down to his own hard work and determination.

In his autobiography, however, he shares a technique that helped him stay focused on his goals: a daily schedule.

Below is a copy of this schedule from his autobiography.
