A photo of “Lovely Julie”—> The B-17 That Refused to Die 🇺🇸
On a mission over Germany in late 1944, “Lovely Julie” of the 398th Bomb Group took a devastating flak hit. 💥
The explosion killed toggler Sgt. Abbott instantly & shredded the nose, destroying nearly all instruments, oxygen systems, & controls. 🪦
The battered Fortress was a wreck, nose blown open, gauges gone, shrapnel everywhere. Yet the pilot fought to keep her in the air. Somehow, through skill, determination, & sheer willpower, he nursed the heavily damaged bomber all the way back to England. 🏴
“Lovely Julie” was a testament to the resilience of the men who flew her & the rugged design of the Flying Fortress. ✈️

In July of 1944, Pfc. Alfonso Ortega of the 607th Quartermaster Graves Registration Company paints white crosses that would be used in the first American Military Cemetery at Vierville-Sur-Mer in Normandy.🪦
Ortega & the 607th arrived in England in March of 1944. Less than a month later, tragedy struck. 🪖
During Operation Tiger, one of the rehearsals for the D-Day invasion of Normandy, the 607th lost 16 men during the tragic German E-boat attack that occurred. ⚓️
Following their work in Normandy, Ortega & his unit moved deeper into the European theater & went on to serve through major operations, including the Battle of the Bulge. 🌨️
The company was awarded the Meritorious Service Unit Plaque for their critical & solemn duties under extreme combat conditions. 🎖️
Ortega survived the war & was discharged by the army, returning home safely to the US after the conclusion of World War II. 🇺🇸

After days of brutal fighting on Saipan, Marine Thomas Underwood pauses for a much-needed drink from his canteen. 💧
The 6' tall Floridia native, serving with 4th Marine Division, had already survived Roi-Namur & was now pushing through the intense combat on Saipan. 🪖
He would survive this battle, but not the next….Iwo Jima. On March 4, 1945, Underwood was killed by shrapnel while leading his squad near the Rock Quarry. 🪦
He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star for his heroism that day. 🎖️🇺🇸
