✅The Union Cabinet approved ratification of protocols on amendments in the International Civil Aviation Convention.
♻️Details :
✅The Union Cabinet approved ratification of three protocols relating to amendments in the Convention on International Civil Aviation or the Chicago Convention 1944.
✅The ratification has been approved in the following three protocols :
🔸Protocol to insert Article 3 bis in the Chicago Convention, 1944 to refrain member States from resorting to the use of weapons against civil aircraft in flight (Protocol signed in May 1984);
🔸Protocol to amend Article 50 (a) of the Chicago Convention, 1944 for raising the strength of the ICAO Council from 36 to 40 (Protocol signed in October 2016);
🔸Protocol to amend Article 56 of the Chicago Convention, 1944 for raising the strength of the Air Navigation Commission from 18 to 21 (Protocol signed in October 2016).
✅The Convention on International Civil Aviation was signed on 7th December 1944 in Chicago.
✅The Chicago convention has undergone a few amendments and India has been ratifying such amendments from time to time.
✅It established the core principles permitting international transport by air, and also led to the creation of the ICAO.
✅The ratification would provide better chances and opportunities for India to become more instrumental in matters pertaining to international civil aviation.

✅NAMASTE Scheme – to eradicate unsafe sewer and septic tank cleaning practices.
♻️Details :
✅The National Action for Mechanised Sanitation Ecosystem (NAMASTE) scheme has been formulated by the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment.
✅It aims to achieve outcomes like zero fatalities in sanitation work in India; no sanitation worker comes in direct contact with human faecal matter and all sewer and septic tank sanitation workers have access to alternate livelihoods.
✅The process of extending the Scheme to all the Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) of the country has been initiated.
✅The main features of the scheme to be implemented in all ULBs are:-
🔸Identification – of sewage and septic tank workers (SSW).
🔸Occupational Training and distribution of PPE Kits to SSWs.
🔸Assistance for Safety Devices to Sanitation Response Units (SRUs).
🔸Extending Health Insurance Scheme Benefits to identified SSWs and their families under the Ayushman Bharat- Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY).
✅Livelihood Assistance :
🔸The Action Plan will promote mechanisation and enterprise development by providing funding support and subsidy (capital +interest) to the sanitation workers, to procure sanitation-related equipment.
🔸Massive campaigns would be undertaken jointly by the ULBs & NSKFDC (National Safai Karamchari Finance Development Corporation) to spread awareness about the interventions of NAMASTE.

🔆22 Nuclear Power Reactors Operational in the Country
✅A quantum jump in India’s nuclear power capacity since 2014.
♻️Details :
✅The annual nuclear power generation in the year 2021-22 was 47,112 Million Units which is around a 30-40% increase from the year 2013-14 when the capacity stood at 35,333 Million Units.
✅This information was provided by the Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) Science & Technology, Dr Jitendra Singh in the Rajya Sabha.
✅A number of initiatives taken by the government has led to a quantum jump in India’s nuclear power capacity.
✅In 2017, approval was given for 11 indigenous Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWR) under the Atmanirbhar Bharat package with a total capacity of 7,000 MegaWatts.
✅PHWR is a nuclear power reactor, commonly using unenriched natural uranium as its fuel.
✅It uses heavy water (Deuterium oxide or D2O) as its coolant and moderator.
✅The world’s first uranium-based nuclear power plant – ‘Bhavini’ using Uranium-233 is being built at Kalpakkam, Tamil Nadu.
✅The experimental Thorium plant ‘Kamini’ is already in Kalpakkam.
✅To augment India’s nuclear power programme, the government started allowing joint ventures with Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) in 2015.
✅As per this decision, NPCIL (Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited) is in two joint ventures – one with Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) and the other with National Thermal Power Corporation Limited (NTPC).

🔆SPRINT Scheme
✅The Indian Navy has recently inked an agreement with Sagar Defence Engineering Pvt. Ltd for acquiring armed autonomous boat swarms under the ‘SPRINT’ initiative.
✅‘SPRINT’ Scheme is an initiative to promote development of niche defence technologies by domestic companies.
✅The task of development of this technology is one of the 75 challenges that have been introduced by the Indian Navy under Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav last year.
✅To achieve ‘Aatmanirbharta’ in defence, Naval Innovation and Indigenisation Organisation (NIIO), in conjunction with the Defence Innovation Organisation (DIO), aims to induct at least 75 new indigenous technologies/products into the Indian Navy till august 2023.
✅This collaborative project is named SPRINT {Supporting Pole-Vaulting in R&D through Innovations for Defence Excellence (iDEX), NIIO and Technology Development Acceleration Cell (TDAC)}.
✅It was launched by Prime Minister in July, 2022.
✅It will transform Navy from a ‘Buyer’s Navy’ to a ‘Builder’s Navy.
✅Naval Innovation and Indigenisation Organisation (NIIO): Defence Ministry had launched the NIIO in August 2020, to encourage innovation and indigenisation for self-reliance in defence sector.
✅It is a 3-tiered organisation:
Naval Technology Acceleration Council (N-TAC) will bring together the twin aspects of innovation and indigenization and provide apex level directives.
✅Working group under the N-TAC will implement the projects.
✅Technology Development Acceleration Cell (TDAC) has been created for induction of emerging disruptive technology in an accelerated time frame.
