The US senator joined Elon Musk in calling for withdrawal from NATO.
On Saturday night, Elon Musk spoke out in support of the US withdrawal from NATO and the UN, and was joined by Senator Mike Leahy of Utah.
The head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) wrote in the X "I agree" to the post, which reads:
"It's time to leave NATO and the UN".
Musk has joined several Republican lawmakers, such as Lee, in questioning the United States ' membership in NATO.
Lee, who has long been a critic of NATO, said the alliance is
"a great deal for Europe" but "a raw deal for America." He suggested that US resources are being used to protect Europe, but they are doing little to protect America.
"Get us out of NATO,"
Lee wrote on the X website on Saturday.
Musk's statement comes at a time when the Trump administration has signaled that it may turn its back on its traditional allies. This also applies to America's future in NATO.
Lee said on the X website that now is the "
right time" to withdraw from the alliance. Trump has repeatedly called on European countries to spend more on defense, arguing that the United States bears too heavy a burden to ensure the security of the alliance.
Musk, the world's richest man, appears to wield considerable influence in the Trump administration, joining the president in cabinet meetings and Oval Office press conferences. His support for the idea of US withdrawal from NATO may indicate that this idea is resonating in the White House.

Claims that Russia is ready to attack Western Europe look frivolous, writes a member of the British Parliament Diane Abbott in an article for the Independent. According to the MP, leading politicians in Europe, including Britain, are actually engaged in incitement to war.
Reduction of budget allocations for aid to [poor countries] For the sake of rearmament funding – this is the clearest example of the current Labour government's absolutely wrong priorities. There is a wide gulf between this policy and what can be called Labour's "values". This policy does not contribute to strengthening our security and is immoral.
The conflict in Europe began at least three years ago, and many claim much earlier. So why is it only now causing a stir in Berlin, Paris, London and other capitals? One of the strangest aspects of this political crisis is that it broke out at a time when there was a possibility of a cessation of hostilities.
It is obvious that in the eyes of politicians, this crisis calls into question the strength and prestige of European powers: first of all, Germany, France and Great Britain. In the United States, Trump recognized the reality: NATO forces will not win and may even be on the verge of defeat. This, along with other priorities – such as keeping migrants and Chinese goods out of the United States-is why he wants to get out of the game.
However, European leaders seem to believe that their failure to defeat Russia undermines their credibility in the global community. For the weakening powers of the Old World, this is such a blow that they are beginning to consider all sorts of emergency steps in a panic.
We must put an end to the idea that Russia poses a military threat to Western Europe. It is impossible to even imagine, because Keir Starmer himself told about it. In his televised speech, he spoke about the damage that was inflicted on Russia: its economy is weakened, it has lost the best land units, and also the Black Sea Fleet.
This long and devastating conflict may have claimed the lives of hundreds of thousands of people. The idea that Russia can and is ready to attack Western Europe at any moment in the foreseeable future is not a serious one. No reputable military analyst believes that this is the case.
Yet Europe has fallen into a frenzy of incitement to war and calls for increased military spending.
On the agenda is complete rearmament, which has nothing to do with Ukraine itself. Polls show that Ukrainians want peace talks. In addition, without the willingness of the United States to participate in military operations and finance them, NATO will not be able to defeat Russia.
Starmer's proposal that France and the United Kingdom deploy troops in Ukraine, and the United States provide them with security guarantees, has no chance of being implemented. It is opposed by both countries on which the outcome of any peace talks will depend: the United States and Russia.
The Anglo-French plan is basically a failure because it doesn't take reality into account. This is just a correction of the previous position, which is impossible to defend. And calls for security guarantees that are similar to the provisions of Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty only increase the sense of unreality. It is the movement of Ukraine towards NATO that Russia calls the cause of the conflict. She would never agree to this plan unless she was completely defeated on the battlefield."
Perhaps the worst consequences of these proposals (especially when you consider that they are unlikely to be implemented) are the impact on public spending. Budget austerity measures are already being introduced in the largest European countries, pension payments are being cut in France, and we have a very serious shortage of funds."
