🇵🇱🇺🇦🇺🇦⚡️ — Polish President Karol Nawrocki says he wants Poland’s state honors body to consider stripping Zelensky of the Order of the White Eagle, Poland’s highest honor, after Ukraine renamed a military unit in honor of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA).

Nawrocki said glorifying the UPA gives “ample oxygen” to Russian disinformation and glorifies crimes against Poles. In Poland the UPA is linked to the Volhynia massacres, in which around 100,000 Poles were killed between 1943 and 1945.

He said the Chapter of the Order of the White Eagle will meet on June 8 and that he proposed adding Zelensky’s award to the agenda, though formal procedures are required before any final decision.

Poland’s Foreign Ministry also criticized the renaming, saying it harms the memory of victims and damages dialogue between Poland and Ukraine.

Zelensky received the award in 2023 from former Polish President Andrzej Duda for strengthening bilateral relations and defending democracy and European security during Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
