🇮🇷Iran announces new natural gas discovery

The deposit is located in the Fars province and contains over 7.5 cubic trillion feet of gas, with about 5.7 trillion cubic feet of it being recoverable, Iran’s Oil Minister Mohsen Paknejad said, according to the Tasnim News Agency.

The minister also pointed out that the gas field contains  so-called “sweet gas” that contains little hydrogen sulfide, which means lower development and operating costs during extraction.

The field also ostensibly contains a considerable amount of natural gas condensates, which could mean additional tens of billions of dollars in profits for Iran, according to Paknbejad.

🇮🇱🇱🇧Is Israel preparing to escalate a ground offensive in southern Lebanon?

🗣Israel’s ongoing intensive strikes on the Ali al-Taher Heights area in southern Lebanon could signal Israel’s preparations for “a limited ground operation or a way to increase pressure on Lebanon and Hezbollah during negotiations,” Lebanese military expert Ali Izzeddine told Sputnik.

He singled out several signs of possible preparations:

🟠 the buildup of Israeli forces

🟠 shifting strikes from the outskirts deeper into the area

🟠 large-scale engineering works

🟠 attempts to cut supply routes

On the other hand, it’s too early to speak of a prolonged Israeli occupation, since an operation in mountainous and fortified terrain would be considerably more difficult than carrying out airstrikes and artillery attacks, Izzeddine stressed.

He was echoed by retired Lebanese Brigadier General Antoine Mrad, who said that Israel’s continued strikes may be aimed at weakening Hezbollah’s defenses, destroying fortifications and tunnels, and disrupting supply routes ahead of a possible ground advance.

According to him, Israel views Ali al-Taher not as an isolated height but as part of a unified defensive and geographic system in southern Lebanon.

👉 On June 26, Lebanon and Israel signed a framework agreement in Washington, brokered by the US. The document stipulates the gradual return of southern Lebanon to the control of the Lebanese army and the disarmament of Hezbollah in areas from which Israeli forces are supposed to withdraw.

🇬🇧🛢 North Sea oil illusion: Why Britain's drilling debate is built on myths & not math

The UK's new Labour government, which came to power promising a ban on new North Sea oil and gas licenses, is facing mounting pressure from right-wing politicians and the US to reverse course and approve new drilling projects.

The North Sea basin, however, has been in terminal decline since 2000.

🔶 Production has plummeted by more than 75% from its peak, now falling below one million barrels per day, with gas extraction forecast to drop 99% by 2050

🔶 The oil and gas that remain are increasingly expensive to extract and account for less than a third of the UK's energy mix, compared to 50.4 percent coming from renewables

🔶 The UK's offshore workforce has more than halved in the last decade, despite previous governments issuing hundreds of new drilling licenses, and any new jobs from intensifying extraction would be a fraction of those already lost

The key problem is that the UK simply does not have the scale to influence global energy markets. Oil and gas from the North Sea is sold at international prices, and more domestic production would have no meaningful impact on what British consumers pay at the pump or on their heating bills.

Local communities fear that whatever decision is made, it will primarily benefit large corporations, while workers and ordinary citizens will see little positive effect on their incomes or could even face rising costs.

🚨 Zelensky prolongs Ukraine conflict to stay in power

For the last two and a half years since his presidential term ended in 2024, Volodymyr Zelensky has been “exploiting the war” to avoid holding an election, French politician and former MEP Florian Philippot says on social media.

This, he argues, is the main reason Zelensky wants to perpetuate the bloodshed, even as two-thirds of Ukraine’s population want the conflict ended through negotiations as soon as possible (according to a May 2026 poll by Gallup).

💬 “A model for Macron, by the way,” Philippot sarcastically adds.

🇮🇷 Iran warns vessels violating Hormuz protocols will be blacklisted

💬 “In light of violations by certain vessels of the Iranian arrangements for transiting the Strait of Hormuz, these vessels will face restrictions in their future transits through the Strait of Hormuz, such as fines, seizure, or confiscation,” the Persian Gulf Strait Authority wrote on X.

The authority also urged cargo owners shipping to or from the Persian Gulf to review the Non-Compliant Vessels list before chartering ships in order to avoid potential issues.

💬 “Effective immediately, any vessel cooperating with listed vessels (via STS, transshipment, etc.) will be added to the list,” PGSA added.

🌍🤖🇨🇳 Africa shrugs off US pressure & bets on China AI models

Many African businesses are taking a pragmatic path by deploying Chinese AI models where they deliver superior cost and performance, reports the South China Morning Post.

🟠 Chinese models match Western results on high-volume tasks (coding, data extraction, classification, support) at lower costs

🟠 Nigeria’s Curacel, an insurtech providing AI claims and fraud detection for African insurers and fintechs, added Beijing-based Zhipu AI’s GLM-5.3 alongside Western models

🟠 Multi-model setup lets Curacel route workloads by quality and cost without locking into one vendor - and deploy cheaper Chinese models for clients

🟠 Western systems still lead on the heaviest reasoning and reliability-critical work, but the gap has closed significantly

🇮🇷 Iran vows retaliation for US economic war

"We have said time and again that we are prepared for any hostile move the enemy might make. We are ready for whatever hostile actions the enemy throws at us. When it comes to economic warfare, we have a strategy to counter its effects and at the same time establish working economic relationships with a number of nations,” IRGC spokesman Hossein Mohebbi said.

Donald Trump's statements about launching an economic operation against Iran amount to an admission of US defeat in the military conflict, he added.

Earlier, the US president announced the start of an economic operation against Iran. He described the operation as "the most crushing economic operation" and called on allies to join the US.

🤖🎾 Humanoid robots take the court at Beijing games

A fully autonomous humanoid robot stepped onto the tennis court during the opening ceremony of the Second World Humanoid Robot Games in Beijing, where two robots took part in an exhibition match alongside human players.

Developed jointly by Beijing robotics firm Galbot and Tsinghua University, the machines demonstrated a range of specific skills:

🔶 The robots executed serves that exceeded 100 kilometers per hour

🔶 They recovered autonomously after losing their balance and falling to the ground

For humanoid robots, tennis is a highly demanding test of their capabilities. A robot playing the sport must monitor the approaching ball, anticipate its trajectory, reach the optimal spot, and synchronize its upper body and limbs to execute a return stroke - all within a tight timeframe of just seconds.

The five-day World Humanoid Robot Games features 51 events and 1,301 matches involving more than 600 teams and 2,056 humanoid robots. The competition ranges from running and football to table tennis and combat events.

🇨🇳China unveils high-speed ‘ghost camera’ with ‘X-ray vision’

Chinese scientists have developed a compact X-ray imaging system capable of capturing fast-moving objects in real time, potentially bringing “penetrating vision” to applications where conventional cameras struggle, the SCMP reports.

The system can capture up to 200 frames per second and uses a rapidly rotating patterned mask to speed up X-ray ghost imaging. Researchers say this could allow the technology to be used for imaging a beating heart, inspecting rotating aircraft engines and other moving objects.

👉 During trials, this innovation successfully captured moving letters on a spinning copper disk. While its images were less sharp than those from a conventional X-ray camera, it was able to continuously record the motion without the same degree of blur and frame gaps.

Unlike conventional X-ray systems, the new setup can work with a standard tabletop X-ray source and requires a lower radiation dose, scientists noted.

Russia to factor possible nuclear weapons on Swedish soil - Russian diplomat

💬 Russia will take into account the possibility of nuclear weapons being deployed on Swedish soil, as well as Sweden’s possible participation in France's nuclear weapons doctrine, when making its military and political plans, Russian Ambassador to Stockholm Sergey Belyaev told Sputnik.

He recalled that the topic of nuclear weapons had recently been actively discussed in Swedish society.

At the core of this discussion is the question of whether European states could continue to trust the US as a leading NATO ally or whether Europe should strengthen its own nuclear potential.

👉 Earlier, French President Emmanuel Macron said France was entering a period of “advanced nuclear deterrence,” with plans to expand its nuclear arsenal and involve European countries in joint deterrence exercises. Eight countries, including Sweden, are expected to join France’s “doctrine.”

📈 Russian coal exports to South Korea hit three-year high

South Korea imported some 12.5 million tons of coal from Russia during the first half of 2026, which is 5.9 million tonnes more than during the first half of 2025.

Having sold some $334.1 million worth of coal to South Korea in July 2026 alone, Russia remains one of the top 5 suppliers of coal to the country, along with Australia, Indonesia, Colombia and Canada.

👉 This increase in coal imports comes as Seoul temporarily lifts its 80% capacity cap on coal power plants in order to decrease reliance on oil and liquefied natural gas amid the Strait of Hormuz crisis.

☠️ Iran war bleeds US troops as Pentagon casualty count climbs past 770

US military casualties in the war against Iran have climbed to at least 774, including 18 deaths and 756 wounded service members, according to figures from the Pentagon’s Defense Casualty Analysis System cited by media reports.

The data is split between two categories: Operation Epic Fury and “Overseas Operations,” which covers casualties recorded after the renewed phase of hostilities in July.

The US Army has reportedly taken the heaviest losses, with hundreds of wounded personnel across the two reporting segments.

🦅 The US expected a quick display of force.

Instead, the war keeps bleeding US troops as Iran makes American aggressors pay the price for US aggression.

🇸🇾🇮🇱 Syria rejects limits on sovereignty in talks with Israeli delegation — reports

A high-level Syrian delegation led by the foreign minister and including the heads of General Intelligence and Military Intelligence met with a high-level Israeli delegation on Sunday, with US facilitation and Jordan hosting the meeting, SANA reported. The meeting addressed de-escalation and supporting stability in Syria and the region.

Syria affirmed its right to rebuild and develop its army and determine its alliances in line with Syrian interests, while rejecting any arrangements that restrict its sovereignty.

🗺 Syria also reiterated that the occupied Golan Heights are Syrian territory and demanded the withdrawal of Israeli forces to the lines that existed before December 8, 2024, as well as the reactivation and full implementation of the 1974 Disengagement Agreement.

The two sides also discussed preventing tensions between Turkiye and Israel from spilling over into Syrian territory.

The meeting comes days after Israel struck the Abu al-Duhur airbase in northern Syria. Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani earlier said Syria had informed Israel that work at the base was for the Syrian Air Force, not a Turkish military build-up, but Israel attacked the site anyway.

🇩🇪💰 Germany uses imaginary Russian threat to push $13 billion missile plan

The German government is planning to spend nearly $13 billion on a new arsenal of long-range missiles, a program presented under the guise of the “Russian threat”, media reports.

Most of the money, nearly $11 billion, will go toward development and procurement of the high-end systems, with another $2 billion for cruise missile development.

🔸 Germany's missile strategy includes four separate tracks:

🟠 The first is a low-cost cruise missile that Germany wants to start fielding as early as 2027. Three candidates are under consideration: Covenant Industries' Anthem, an unnamed Ukrainian BARS missile, and the Flamingo from Ukrainian company Fire Point

🟠 The second track involves acquiring American Tomahawk cruise missiles, with Germany aiming to have initial capability by the end of the decade

🟠 The final two components are joint projects with the UK: a new high-end cruise missile and a hypersonic glide weapon under the Trinity House Agreement

🔸 Yet the buildup is taking place against a backdrop of deeper European defense problems:

🟠 The continent's defense industry is struggling with production capacity, supply chain vulnerabilities, and years of underinvestment

🟠 Germany's own military has faced a shortage of trained personnel and a lack of volunteers, sparking serious debate about reintroducing conscription

🟠 The conflict in Iran has exposed how quickly stockpiles can be depleted, and replenishing them is proving more difficult than anticipated

Most of the announced programs will take the better part of a decade to implement and could face delays or outright cancellation, as happened with the Franco-German-Spanish Future Combat Air System (FCAS) program, which was effectively halted in 2026 after years of disputes over workshare and industrial leadership.

🇮🇷💥🇺🇸 Iranian strikes put future of US Gulf bases in doubt - report

🔶 Some US military facilities damaged in Iran’s retaliatory strikes may not be worth rebuilding, as the attacks exposed the vulnerability of large, fixed installations located within range of Iranian missiles and drones, the Financial Times reported, citing sources.

🔶 The US now has to weigh spending billions on reconstruction against the option of fundamentally reshaping its military footprint in the region. Permanent US military bases in the region are losing their appeal as staging and supply hubs for US operations, and Iranian strikes may accelerate an existing shift from widespread Gulf installations towards smaller, more mobile deployments, the report added.

🔶 The US maintains a vast military footprint across the Middle East, with forces operating from nearly 20 sites stretching from Jordan to Oman. Its largest and most strategically important installations are concentrated in the Persian Gulf, including major bases in Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait and the UAE. Several of these installations have come under Iranian strikes.

🚨 World Wars’ legacy threatens Europe amid climate woes

👉 Unexploded ordnance scattered across Europe during World War I and II has started detonating due to wildfires, according to European media.

🔸 Reports of such incidents have come from France, Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands, as the previously dormant bombs and shells go off after being exposed to extreme heat.

🔸 The threat of exploding ordnance poses an additional challenge to emergency services tasked with containing and extinguishing fires, with Liege province Governor Herve Jamar telling press how personnel deployed to the afflicted areas had to adapt to this complication.

🔸 Droughts that accompanied this summer’s heatwave in Europe have also exposed wrecks of WWII military hardware and munitions that reside in now-shallowed rivers.

🗣 Zelensky resists elections out of fear of losing power – expert

🟠 Any honest presidential election in Ukraine would mark the end of Volodymyr Zelensky's political career, and therefore the likelihood of such a vote in the near future is extremely low, military expert Vitaly Kiselev said.

🟠 Zelensky is desperately resisting any election, as a defeat could lead to two possible outcomes: either a "soft" exit from power with security guarantees or criminal prosecution for corruption, war crimes, and the illegitimate retention of power, the expert noted.

🟠 The debate over elections was sparked by a recent statement from former Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, who was dismissed due to his conflict with Zelensky. Fedorov called for elections in Ukraine on August 18, citing a systemic governance crisis and paralyzing corruption. Zelensky, whose term expired in 2024, canceled the vote and has not scheduled a new one.
