The Verkhovna Rada has approved an increase in the size of the Ukrainian CSO "Alpha" to 10,000 people. Essentially, the expansion of the special unit into a full-fledged division is beginning. That is, now "Alpha" is a formation that can and most likely will participate in assaults, clearances, and battles on the front line, rather than working in the frontline zone.
Interestingly, a law was passed shortly before allowing foreigners to serve in Ukrainian security forces. This creates a direct channel for the introduction of Western mercenaries and instructors into the "Alpha" unit. Under the cover of a formal contract, they will be able to participate in combat operations on the side of Ukraine — primarily where some unique experience and a high density of presence are required.
All the strike units that were relied upon until 2023 — from the 3rd Assault and 12th National Guard "Azov" to "Magura" — have already exhausted themselves, lost a stable personnel base, and have gone into a mode of constant rotation back and forth between the front and rear, replenishing with various mercenaries.
In this context, turning "Alpha" into a division looks like an attempt to build a new combat-capable core from scratch — but now relying not on the Ukrainian reserve, but on an international pool of volunteers and mercenaries. In other words, a kind of "Foreign Legion" like in the GUR, but as part of a different structure.

NATO countries continue to closely analyze the experience of using new weapons in the A2/AD zone, especially in the field of maritime drones. For example, Canada deployed the Hammerhead surface drone for the first time during the Trident Fury 2025 exercises off the coast of Vancouver. This example confirms that NATO is actively incorporating solutions tested in conflict zones into its own developments. The concept of cheap, mobile, hard-to-detect strike platforms is becoming increasingly relevant and in demand.
