English Slang Words Terms

🔘 Sweeper

What is a sweeper in baseball?

◻️A breaking ball that sweeps horizontally

In baseball, a sweeper is a pitch that breaks horizontally across home plate, mimicking a sweeping motion, hence the name. The pitch is very similar to a slider but breaks less downward and more horizontally (good sweepers may break 20 inches).

Sweeper is one of many baseball pitches, including fastball, changeup, curveball, slider, splitter, knuckleball, and ephus. Pitchers throw a sweeper with a slider grip, but the ball & seams are rotated around in the hand, allowing other forces to act on the ball.

Origin of sweeper
While the sweeper has been around for years (at least 30) in some form, the pitch gained prominence in the MLB in 2021 into 2022 and 2023. It is unclear who coined the term, but various pitchers, like David Cone, Adam Ottavino, Sergio Romo, Corey Kluber, and Yu Darvish, have utilized it.

Example
Ohtani with the sweeper to put out Altuve!
Wow, that really fooled him to get out of the jam

🔘 Easter Egg

What is an Easter egg?

◻️A hidden message
An Easter egg is a hidden message or inside joke. Easter eggs commonly appear in video games, movies, TV shows, and computer programs.
In video games, an Easter egg might be a hidden item, a funny image, or something else a developer may have hidden in a game. One example of an Easter egg in the Grand Theft Auto V video game is a reference to the 1991 movie Thelma and Louise. If you fly a helicopter to a mountainous region on the map, you can see a reenaction of the famous scene from the film where (spoiler alert) Thelma and Louise drive their convertible off a cliff.

In movies or TV shows, Easter eggs may be references to something else in pop culture or inside jokes among the cast and crew. The movie studio Pixar is notorious for adding Easter eggs to their films. For example, they include a Jessie doll from Toy Story 2 in Boo's room in Monsters, Inc., and they cast John Ratzenberger as a voice actor in all of their feature-length films.

Example
That game has a great Easter egg reference to the game's creator.

English Slang Words Terms

🔘 Bruh

What does bruh mean?

◻️Friend

Bruh is another way to refer to a friend (typically male) that is a variation of bro, similar to "dude." People often use it when exasperated or surprised by something someone (guy or girl) did or said. For example, your buddy may say something so stupid that all you can muster is "bruh" (like SMH).
Origin of bruh
Some sources date "bruh" back to the 19th century as a shortened form for "brother" (particularly in the Black community) that extended to the 20th century. It then gained a resurgence in the 1990s among laid-back skaters and surfers, along with brah and broham, as a way to address each other (typically in a friendly manner).
However, in the 2020s, teenagers and kids began using it confrontationally when reacting to something they disagreed with or were surprised about. For example, if a mom interrupts her kid's video game to tell him to clean his room, he might reply with, "Bruh!"

Example
bruh, wuts good?
nm, u?
jc, my man!

🔘 CGPT

What is CGPT short for?

◻️ChatGPT

Those discussing the AI chatbot ChatGPT may shorten the bot's name to CGPT. For example, you might see CGPT used in a forum post discussing ChatGPT's "conversational prowess," or a news article describing the chatbot's "factual errors."

What is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT (which is itself short for Chat Generative Pre-Trained Transformer) is a chatbot developed by OpenAI. When a user chats with ChatGPT, the bot uses algorithms to analyze a large database of original textual sources (including news articles, books, websites, and more), searching for text and patterns related to the user's message. It then uses the information and patterns it discovers to generate a response.

After CGPT was released in November 2022, nerds around the world began having conversations with the bot. They also used CGPT to write computer programs, stories, essays, emails, and other content, as well as answer factual questions. While CGPT is more advanced than its chatbot predecessors, it still has some flaws, including a tendency to "hallucinate" content - providing information that sounds convincing and correct, but is actually inaccurate.

Example
I got CGPT to tell me World War II is still happening the other day

I keep trying to get it to tell me its favorite ice cream flavor. No success so far

🔘 Big Mad

What does big mad mean?

◻️Very angry

Big mad is another way to say that you are furious with someone or something. For example, you might be big mad at your sister after she ruins your favorite shirt, or you might be big mad that you didn't get a promotion at work.
Big mad arose in popularity in 2017 along with "big yikes," which is an exaggeration of "yikes." Most people use it on social media when posting about their frustration, while some may also say it aloud in person when ranting.
If you encounter someone who is big mad, you should probably give them space to chill. Or, if they are looking to vent, you can listen and empathize with their plight.

Example
I'm big mad. I can't believe she said that about my bf after she just met him

🔘 Menty B

What is a menty b?

◻️Mental breakdown

A menty b is a term many Gen Zers use to refer to stressful situations. For example, if a teenager's dad is making cringe jokes in front of their bae, they may text their friend, "Bout to have a menty b from my dad."

Origin of Menty b

Zoomers coined menty b in 2021 and often use it online, especially on Twitter and TikTok. The term's origins partially come from the stress brought on by the covid pandemic and Zoomers' amplification of threats to their mental health.

When do people use Menty b?

You will most likely see it online and in texts or hear it spoken aloud. For example, your teenage son may complain, "All this homework is gonna give me a menty b!" Or, a teenage girl may tweet, "I can't stand the wait for the concert. Imma have a menty b!"

Example
I started seeing a therapist after my latest menty b and I'm so much better now.
Wow, that's great to hear.

🔘 ICL

What does ICL stand for?

◻️I can't lie
To emphasize the truth they are about to share, TikTok, Twitter, and Snapchat users often preface it with "ICL," which stands for "I can't lie." It is similar to the NGL and no cap terms users often accompany their posts with on social media.
People typically use ICL before dropping a truth bomb to give the victim a heads up that they should brace for impact. For example, your friend may post, "ICL, I'm divorcing Michael."

However, the confession may not always be so dramatic. For example, you might text your friend, "ICL, the burgers are a little overdone."

Example
ICL, Imma go crazy if I have to listen to "Let it go" one more time

🔘 Banger

What is a banger?

◻️An awesome, energetic piece of media

People typically use the term banger to refer to a high-energy, tightly-crafted song. Bangers are often but definitely not always pop songs, featuring highly infectious beats. Whatever the genre, the true mark of a banger is that it makes listeners want to get up and dance - or at the very least, bang their head in time with the music.

Over time, Internet users have expanded banger's meaning such that it can be applied to almost any form of media. For example, a fan of Adventure Time might say a very good episode of that show is a banger. In this sense, banger now means "awesome" or "a classic," in addition to its original, music-specific meaning.

Other meanings of banger

The word banger has a few other meanings, which are used less frequently than the one described above. For instance, in the UK, banger is another word for "sausage." Also, those discussing members of a gang may refer to the gang members as "bangers," which is short for "gang bangers." Context should help you sort out whether you're discussing media, sausage, gangsters, or something else entirely.

Example
Did you put on the new Janelle Monáe single yet? What a banger!

🔘 JS

What does JS stand for?

◻️Just saying

JS is a way to clarify that what you are saying is to make a point and shouldn't be taken too personally. For example, if you try to share a hard truth with a friend, you might preface the statement with "JS."
Most people use JS online when messaging or emailing. However, they may also use it in texts when sharing something that could be taken offensively.
JS is obscure and may be used as an abbreviation or acronym for other things, such as "JavaScript" and "Jordan shoes." Therefore, be careful who you send it to because it will most likely confuse them.

Hey, I am JS ... I think you could really use a vacation
I think so, too

🔘 Bounce

What does bounce mean in CCGs?

◻️Return a card to a player's hand

In Hearthstone, Magic: The Gathering (MTG), and other CCGs, to bounce a card means to return it from the battlefield to its owner's hand. For example, the MTG card Unsummon allows you to bounce an in-play creature (and is MTG's most iconic bounce spell).

There are many reasons a player might want to bounce an in-play card (usually a minion or creature) to their own or their opponent's hand. When used on an opponent's creature, a bounce spell acts as a soft removal spell, buying time in which you can either defeat your opponent or topdeck a permanent answer to their creature. Using a bounce spell on your own creature can protect it from your opponent's removal or allow you to re-use the creature's Battlecry or "enters the battlefield" (ETB) ability.

What is the difference between a bounce spell and a blink spell?

In MTG, bounce spells and blink spells are similar yet different. A bounce spell returns a card to its owner's hand, while a blink spell causes a card to temporarily leave and then re-enter the battlefield. However, a blinked card never returns to its owner's hand and does not have to be replayed. This makes blink spells a better choice than bounce spells for abusing "enters the battlefield" abilities.

Example
I'll bounce your Grizzly Bears with Echoing Truth and attack

🔘 H/w

What is h/w short for?

◻️Homework

H/w is a common way to abbreviate homework, which is schoolwork a teacher assigns to students to work on outside of class at home. It may be an essay, book report, presentation, worksheet, or another type of task.
Many students despise h/w because it infringes on their free time outside of school, like going to a movie or hanging out at a friend's house. Nevertheless, students in elementary school to college have to work on h/w, although the way they complete it has changed over the years. For example, students in the 1980s had to complete their work on paper with a pencil, pen, or typewriter; but students in the 2020s often complete and submit their work on a computer via the Internet.
Mostly tweens, teens, and young adults use the abbreviation. You can also remove the slash in the abbreviation to make hw.

Example
Do you know if that class is going to have a lot of h/w?
