ITALY'S ICONIC STONE BRIDGE

It has survived great floods and captured the admiration of one of the world's most notorious tyrants. The Ponte Vecchio, or "Old Bridge," has been a fixture of the cityscape of Florence, Italy, since being built in 1345. The arched structure is Florence's oldest bridge and is known today for the many jewelry and metal shops that line its walkway.

Above the shops is a secret passageway called the Vasari Corridor, named after its architect, Giorgio Vasari, and built for the Medici family in 1565. The Medicis used it to avoid crowds when traveling between the Uffizi Gallery and their home, Palazzo Pitti.

It was in this very corridor that Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini met in 1938, resulting in the "Pact of Steel" alliance between Germany and Italy the following year. In 1944, it was the only Florentine bridge spared by the Nazis as they blazed a path of destruction through the city while retreating from Allied forces. Popular legend attests that Hitler was so enamored of the bridge that he ordered the Ponte Vecchio preserved.
