Newcastle United supporters should not expect major additions during the upcoming January transfer window, according to Stefan Borson. Speaking to Football Insider, Borson urged fans to remain patient as the club commits to its new long-term squad vision.
Although gaps in the squad remain evident, major financial outlay in January appears unlikely:
"I suspect they don't have huge spending capacity. They might have a little flexibility in January, but they've clearly committed to a strategic direction focused on younger talent. If they do sign anyone in January, it will likely be more 21-and-under prospects, meaning fans will need to stay patient as the team develops over time."
Instead of marquee arrivals, January may see more departures. Midfielder Joe Willock is unlikely to extend his contract, forcing Newcastle to consider selling him mid-season to avoid losing him for free.
"We dominated the game, we controlled it..." — Matthias Jaissle's baffling post-match claims left me questioning reality after our latest defeat 🤔
It’s not often you want to disagree with the manager, but after yesterday’s frustrating defeat, Matthias Jaissle’s post-match assessment feels miles away from what actually played out on the pitch.
Reflecting on the result & the supporters' reaction at the full-time whistle, Jaissle tried to take positives from the performance:
"Well, we're frustrated with the result. We wanted to give our fans here at home a better one. When you go through the match, I think the response was there, especially until we conceded the first goal.
“We dominated the game, we controlled it, without being constantly in the opposition box. Yes, this is something we need to work on. That's also part of the truth, that the team was a bit shaky after the goal we conceded."
To claim we "dominated" and "controlled" the game is hard to swallow. In reality, we didn't control the game at all; we were caught wide open several times, never really looked like scoring with just the one shot on target all night, & stood and watched them cross it in to score as easy as you like. It had to be the man who turned his down as well huh!
Jaissle continued, pointing to the second-half display & efficiency issues in the final third:
"But when the lads came out in the second half, I think straight away you felt that energy, that belief again, that today at least we want to go for the draw, if not for the win even.
"Yeah, the efficiency in the opposition box was then missing. That's clearly something we need to work on.
"Between the two boxes, everything was quite solid. Against a strong opponent, we made again a next step in the dual behaviour, in the aggressiveness, but in the final third we were lacking the decision-making today, or the decision-making was not good enough to be even more efficient and to create even more chances.
"And the few chances which should be also enough to score, we didn't use today."
While the boss highlighted "solid" play between the boxes, myself and most fans watching from the stands around me saw a disjointed setup. With misplaced passes piling up, we were far too often left with just two central defenders and our smallest midfielder trying to hold the fort as a makeshift defence.
Addressing the full-time boos ringing around the ground, Jaissle acknowledged the supporters' frustration:
"Yeah, they for sure also wished another result, like we did, so that's their right.
"They all come here to celebrate after 90 minutes with the team, for three points in the best occasion, and we couldn't deliver that today. Therefore, we are aware of that, & that's normal in football.
"We can just control what we're doing now during the week. We can work hard, we need to work hard on the things I just mentioned to improve these things with the young lads & then see a different result."
Hard work on the training ground is certainly needed this week. But if we are going to turn performances around, the coaching staff need to start seeing the same glaring flaws that the supporters are witnessing every week from the stands & make some changes. The excuses are becoming tiring and repetitive too. Yes this was always going to be rollercoaster season, but a rollercoaster has highs as well as lows, this feels more like a train crash! Yesterday with just a solitary shot on target all game, terrible set pieces & no obvious plan or creativity should be making us all start to worry. We should be setting alarm bells off now, before it's too late.
I feel sorry for the manager, in that he was brought in late and was given these players, but I can't see a Plan A at the moment never mind a Plan B. I also don't think he has been given all the tools to do the job either, with us looking toothless up top. Even when we have won this season, bar Spurs, we've done so in a back......
