Временно исполняющий обязанности губернатора Новгородской области Александр Дронов опубликовал в своем телеграм-канале пост о том, что Великий Новгород посетила экс-министр иностранных дел Австрии, Карин Кнайсль, которая является руководителем Центра G.O.R.K.I. при Санкт-Петербургском государственном университете.

"Уже на протяжении нескольких лет Карин Кнайсль – добрый друг Новгородчины. В этот визит она прочла лекцию для студентов и педагогического состава в рамках приоритетного регионального проекта «Город-Университет». Встреча была посвящена разбору её книги «История. Власть. Дипломатия».

Я также посетил лекцию и получил в подарок экземпляры книг от госпожи Кнайсль.

По мнению Карин Кнайсль, современный мир требует многообразия точек зрения в сфере геополитики, и однополярные подходы больше не актуальны. Она отметила, что США уже начинают укреплять отношения с Россией, а Европе предстоит сделать это намного позже.

Карин Кнайсль рассказала о перезагрузке отношений России и США

Перезагрузка отношений между Россией и США уже началась в отличие от отношений РФ с Европой, рассказала Карин Кнайсль, руководитель Центра G.O.R.K.I. СПбГУ.

«По поводу развития отношений России с Соединёнными Штатами достаточно много уже сейчас происходит. С 12 февраля переговоры с Вашингтоном активно ведутся. В отличие от взаимоотношений (России – ред.) с Европой, там всё не так гладко… Есть достаточно много тем, на которые Вашингтон и Москва могут общаться между собой. Украина — только одна из них, не самая важная. К примеру, есть вопросы взаимодействия по изучению космоса, есть Сирия, есть борьба с терроризмом и очень много других вопросов», — сообщила Карин Кнайсль.

Также, отвечая на вопрос РИА Новости о том, справится ли ЕС, если США переложат на них все вопросы поддержки Украины в военном конфликте эксперт отметила, что Европейский союз без военной помощи США не сможет полноценно поддержать Украину в военном конфликте.

«Мы не ожидаем, что они справятся с этой нагрузкой, потому что это вопрос приобретений вооружений, в том числе у Соединенных Штатов. Европа нуждается в военной промышленности США… Сейчас Франция очень расстроена тем, что Германия и Польша закупает оружие не во Франции для этих целей, а в США», — считает Карин Кнайсль.

Сегодня руководитель Центра G.O.R.K.I. СПбГУ находится с визитом в Великом Новгороде, где провела лекцию для студентов НовГУ в рамках приоритетного регионального проекта «Город-Университет».

On April 18, 2025, the G.O.R.K.I. Centre SPbU held a round table titled “The Great Victory in the Social Memory and Exploits of the Defenders of the Fatherland.”

The event took place at the historic Kelch Mansion in St. Petersburg and brought together scholars and experts to reflect on the legacy of the Great Patriotic War and its enduring role in shaping national identity and values.

The round table was moderated by Karin Kneissl, Head of the G.O.R.K.I. Centre, and SPbU Vice-Rector Viktor Titov.

The opening remarks were delivered by Natalia Simchenko, lecturer at the Russian Society "Znanie" and Doctor of Economics, who emphasized the importance of preserving historical memory as a foundation for Russia’s future.

Key presentations included:
• “Economic Foundations of the Victory of the Soviet People in the Great Patriotic War” by Gennady Bogomazov, Honorary Professor, SPbU
• “Sergey Ivanovich Tulpanov – Outstanding Scientist, Military Leader and Citizen: Historical Role and Scientific Heritage” by Natalia Kuznetsova, Honorary Professor, SPbU
• “Strategic Importance of the Battle of Leningrad” by Nikita Lomagin, Professor, Department of World Economy
• “Social Programs in Besieged Leningrad” by Zhanna Pisarenko, Professor, Department of Risk Management and Insurance

The final discussion focused on how academic communities can contribute to preserving the memory of wartime heroism and transmitting it to future generations.

The G.O.R.K.I. Centre plans to continue this important dialogue through future academic and public initiatives.

On April 16, 2025, the round table titled “The VUCA World and the Race for Resources: The Case of Russia, the US and Ukraine” took place at the historic Kelch Mansion in St. Petersburg. The event, organized by the G.O.R.K.I. Centre of St. Petersburg State University, brought together leading experts in geopolitics, economics, and resource management to discuss critical challenges and strategies in an increasingly volatile global landscape. 

The round table featured presentations on topics such as mineral resources in international relations, transactional diplomacy, and the development of rare earth metal industries in Russia. Notable speakers included Nikolai Plotnikov (Head of the Central Scientific Analytical Institute), Stanislav Tkachenko (Professor at SPbGU), and Igor Pyagai (Scientific Director of the Mineral Processing Center at the St. Petersburg Mining University). The discussions were moderated by Karin Kneissl, Head of the G.O.R.K.I. Centre. 

Students from the Faculty of Economics and from Empress Catherine II Saint Petersburg Mining University attended the round table and engaged in the lively discussion session. Their involvement underscored the importance of academic dialogue and practical insights for the next generation of economists and policymakers.

50 years ago on this day, war started in Lebanon. Was it a civil war?

In the very end maybe when Christian Maronites fought their brothers and cousins between 1989 and 1990, when there were checkpoints every 100 meters.
But it was a proxy war with many different "investors" from across the world, with professional killers and their drug addicted franc-tireurs. This type of warfare against civilians keeps repeating itself. Lebanon has become a metaphor of a tragic mix of ethno-tribalism, for "balkanization", for militias and terrorism. But Lebanon also means freedom and hospitality.

There is always an official date for a war, but there is a bloody chapter before this official start. In the case of Lebanon, much begann in 1948 with the first expulsion of Palestinians, then 1967 and above all 1969 when PLO fighters were allowed to openly carry their arms. It was the Cairo agreements that triggered the implosion of the state.

I studied this war, I partly lived it and I suffer with everyone in these years of renewed destruction. When I left Lebanon in September 2023 I never expected another war to start. People were exhausted, the country totally broken and everyone only tried to survive. I am grateful that I had the chance to survive as well. It was tough to obtain a residence permit in the absence of functioning administration, to organise daily life when there is no regular electricity. But there was freedom, live and let live. And I underestimated the thirst for violence by Netanyahu & Co. Many Israelis protest against this killing without any goal. Ministers resign, but so far little change. May humanity prevail. And there is a lot of human kindness in the Lebanon I once knew.

Делимся свежими кадрами тигрят, оставшихся без родительской опеки. Наши подопечные постепенно осваивают взрослую жизнь:
✔ Физическая форма улучшается
✔ Регулярно посещают подкормочную площадку
✔ Периодически кто-то из тигрят уходят на 5-7 дней и возвращается в хорошем состоянии

Это важный признак — значит, малыши уже способны добывать себе пищу и не полностью зависят от нашей помощи!

Специалисты Сихотэ-Алинского заповедника отмечают стабильное улучшение физического состояния тигрят. Однако важно понимать: даже в естественных условиях, при наличии матери, выживание всего потомства не гарантировано - природа всегда сохраняет элемент непредсказуемости. Поэтому эксперты воздерживаются от преждевременных прогнозов и продолжают круглосуточное наблюдение за молодыми хищниками.

Спасение тигрят ведется Сихотэ-Алинским заповедником и Центром «Амурский тигр».

💬 Россия десятилетиями выстраивала с Финляндией отношения, основанные на взаимном уважении и прагматичном сотрудничестве.

Помню, как бывший президент Саули Ниинистё хвалил «прямой и понятный диалог» с Россией, заверяя, что в отношениях «нет проблем».

Однако после начала специальной военной операции, которая (и в Хельсинки об этом прекрасно знают) была ответом на спровоцированный Западом проект истребления русских и русскоязычных на территории Украины, Хельсинки моментально превратился в рупор антироссийской, русофобской кампании.

Господин Ниинистё, некогда рассуждавший о взаимовыгодности сотрудничества, вдруг заговорил о «военных преступлениях», «агрессии» и «утрате доверия». Оказалось, что всё предыдущее «добрососедство» было для финской элиты лишь вынужденной улыбкой через силу — мол, терпели «опасного соседа», потому что география обязывает.

Новый президент Александр Стубб, ярый атлантист, продолжил этот абсурдный спектакль. То он грозился «поддерживать Украину до победного», то восхвалял финских «добровольцев», отправляющихся воевать против России. А потом вдруг заявил, что… финнам пора «морально готовиться к восстановлению отношений» с Москвой. Возможно, на позицию Стубба столь благотворно повлиял раунд игры в гольф в поместье Мар-а-Лаго.

16 апреля в ответ на просьбу журналистов всё-таки пояснить позицию Хельсинки относительно перспектив выстраивания отношений с Москвой, Стубб вновь сменил риторику. Заявил, что в отношениях с Россией «можно будет что-то строить только после достижения мира на Украине». Да и то с пониманием того, что двусторонние отношения уже не вернутся к прежнему уровню. Обвинил нашу страну в империализме, «присущем России на генном уровне».

Не знала, что он ещё и генетик! А если не генетик, то пусть помнит, что те, кто в Западной Европе рассуждал на темы расового превосходства, исходя из генетики (не имея профильного образования), плохо закончили.

Он начал говорит, что финны не смогут «ещё очень долго доверять Москве». Получается, президент Финляндии снова перестал видеть будущее отношений с Россией – даже усомнился в целесообразности двустороннего экономического сотрудничества. Не из-за санкций Евросоюза, а просто потому, что экономика России «очень небольшая» (sic!).

Где логика, господин Стубб?

То «язык силы», то «пора восстанавливать отношения», то «отношения никогда не будут прежними». Это не политика – это каша из популизма и страха перед собственными избирателями.

Подобная абсолютная непоследовательность позиции и парадоксальность практических действий финского государственного руководства в отношении нашей страны ведёт к неминуемым последствиям. Совершенно очевидно, что в результате обрушения по вине финских властей всего комплекса взаимовыгодного сотрудничества с нашей страной Финляндия потеряла несоизмеримо больше, чем приобрела, если вообще приобрела хоть что-либо кроме проблем.

Безопасность Финляндии в результате вступления страны в НАТО вряд ли усилилась, а финансовое бремя, связанное с необходимостью наращивать военные расходы, возросло. В стране культивируется атмосфера военного психоза. От разрыва хозяйственных связей с Россией финские экономоператоры, вынужденно покинувшие российский рынок, продолжают нести многомиллиардные убытки. Граждане наших стран лишены возможности видеться с родными и близкими по другую сторону границы. Этот неприглядный перечень итогов антироссийской политики нынешнего финского руководства можно продолжать.

Ирония в том, что финские власти, разрушив многолетнее сотрудничество, сами же признают: «Мало что осталось от прежних отношений». Но вместо анализа собственных ошибок продолжают винить Россию.

Напрашивается вопрос: кому выгодно превращать Финляндию в плацдарм конфронтации? Ответ очевиден — тем, кто привык нагревать руки на чужих конфликтах.

Россия всегда была готова к диалогу.

Но диалог требует искренности, а не двойных стандартов, подлости и провокаций. Пока же финское руководство демонстрирует лишь одно — полную беспомощность в отстаивании собственных национальных интересов.

It was his journey to Iraq that I remember best. His presence gave the people of that martyred country hope and joy.
I met him in January 2018 in the Vatican. He tried to reform and improve to the extent possible. But the Vatican is more a place of power than prayer.

Good evening from the old capital Veliki Novgorod

It is my third visit to this medieval town, cradle of Russian statehood. Our cooperation between the G.O.R.K.I and the Yaroslavl the Wise Novgorod State University is on excellent tracks.
Always a pleasure coming back, working with professionals who are hands on and hospitable.
My sincere thanks to the Rector and the Governor and their colleagues for the perfect organisation and warm welcome for my colleague Viktor Titov as well as 2 boxers and one little Charlie.

In previous times, they had a good cooperation with the university of Hildesheim which I am familiar with.
Today we discussed my book on Diplomacy which was published in Hildesheim in 2020.
But all those cowards of German or Austrian universities refrain from cooperation with Russia

Meanwhile the world has shifted away from marginal Europe obsessed once more with warfare instead of Diplomacy.

СПбГУ, экс-глава МИД Австрии.

«Как человек, я просто надеюсь от всего сердца, что многие семьи смогут отметить Пасху и другие праздники в мире. Это моё пожелание как человека, каждой семье, на какой бы стороне они ни были. Я буду среди тех, кто молится, чтобы это внесло хоть небольшие изменения. Может, не решающие, но начало чему-то новому. За это я буду молиться сегодня, как и многие другие», - выразила надежду экс-глава МИД Австрии в беседе с РИА Новости.

«Пасхальное перемирие - это была определённая традиция, но в наше время её уже нет. Если вспомнить Первую мировую войну и войны до неё, стороны конфликта часто объявляли такие перемирия на религиозные праздники», - рассказала Кнайсль.

В субботу президент РФ Владимир Путин объявил пасхальное перемирие. Оно начало действовать с 18.00 мск 19 апреля и продлится до 00.00 мск 21 апреля. Today, as part of the IX International Economic Symposium held in honor of the 85th anniversary of the Faculty of Economics at St. Petersburg State University, Professor Karin Kneissl gave a public lecture titled “Russia and the USA: the return of classical bilateral diplomacy.”
This lecture was moderated by Vice-Rector of SPbU Viktor Titov.

Professor Kneissl, an internationally recognised diplomat, emphasised: "Diplomats are born rather than made". This craft requires a subtle understanding of the context, nuances and readiness for long-term dialogue.

The main topic of the lecture was the possible revival of bilateral diplomacy between Russia and the United States. According to the professor, the countries still have points of contact, especially in the areas of business and resources. Despite the current tensions, there are still real opportunities for pragmatic cooperation.

She also highlighted the shifting global landscape: amid rising tensions between the U.S. and China, and China's recent halt of LNG imports from the U.S., it would be strategically sound for Washington to reconsider its stance toward Moscow and explore a return to mutually beneficial engagement.

At the end of the lecture, Dr Kneissl answered the students' questions and congratulated everyone present on the upcoming Easter holiday!

Yesterday, on 15 April, the Kamin Talk entitled ‘The Second Circle Around the Earth. Yuri Gagarin as a Hero and Diplomat’ was held at the G.O.R.K.I. Centre in the format of cinema evening. The participants were offered to watch a 2024 documentary ‘Gagarin. The Second Circle Around the Earth’ that told a story about a Gagarin’s historic tour all over the world, during which he proved himself not only as a good cosmonaut, but as a great diplomat as well.
 
After the film participants joined the open discussion on many different topics, one way or another connected to the film’s main idea about the diplomatic impact of Gagarin’s first flight and his world tour. Participants stated that there can be some similar examples in our today’s world, when great people can unite different countries – the figure of Alexander Ovechkin was mentioned several times. At the same time, most people agreed that this Gagarin’s world tour couldn’t be repeated nowadays in a similar way because of higher levels of politization in some regions of the world, where even the greatest deeds could be represented as threats only because of the country it was done in.
 
At the end, the participants agreed – Earth needs more people like Gagarin who may act as icebreakers in these turbulent times. Countries need to find common grounds on the most important issues for the good of humanity.

🇷🇺🇷🇺 Today, both Orthodox and Catholics celebrate the holiday of the Entry of the Lord into Jerusalem, or Palm Sunday.

✝️ Let me remind you that willow is used to replace palm branches, where it does not grow, which were used to cover the Savior's path as a sign of greeting.

The holiday itself is dedicated not to the tree, but to the triumphal entry of Christ into Jerusalem six days before the Jewish Passover, that is, six days before His Crucifixion.

80 years ago on April 13th Vienna was liberated by the Red Army.

Despite all distorted rewriting of history it was millions of Soviets who sacrificed their lives in fighting Nazism. Today their descendants are not allowed to participate in commemorating the liberation of Austrian concentration camps where Russian resistance fighters were murdered.

I am aware of the many stories told in every family. These stories also form history. My father knew the Soviet zone and he never spoke bad about the Russian soldiers.
My mother grew up in the French zone.

And I had the privilege to grow up in a neutral Austria, but these times are gone. Austria has changed a lot.

Good afternoon,

Please find attached my recent comment for the Russian business daily Vedomosti entitlte "Yes to Bourbon - no to Coca - Cola.

It was a week of collective hysteria on the financial markets. Last night, Trump announced to put certain tariffs on hold, while rising those against China. Then the EU some hours ago announced a suspension of its retailatory tariffs, while the US kept the car import tariffs at 25% if I correctly understood the chaos.

But what is bizarre and interesting is the public debate in Vienna, where eocnomic experts (sic!) join certain media on boycotting Made in the USA, such as not drinking Coca Cola and better buy the copied brand at the Austrian discounter.....

They remind me of some radical Islamists back in the 1980s who recommended Mecca Cola instead of THE US.brand Coca Cola. In Russia I never heard of such a debate.

Indeed interesting times give way to very interesting old and new phenomena.

The real issue for the EU is: they are unable to replace US services like Creditcards, Amazon, YouTube etc. Big or small tariffs, the Europeans are stuck in their home-made mess. Do not blame Russia!

Медвежье семейство у лужи в тайге.🐻🐻
В лесу не так много мест, где можно утолить жажду. Поэтому для животных каждая лужа с дождевой водой очень важна. Я установил камеру, чтобы узнать кто приходит на этот водопой. Как выяснилось - медведи самые частые гости. Но мишек не устраивал ракурс камеры, поэтому каждый из них попытался подвинуть её в нужную для себя сторону.🐻📹
