Dear friends!
A year ago, the Geopolitical Observatory for Russia’s Key Issues (G.O.R.K.I. Centre SPbU) opened its doors for talented students, wise experts and real professionals from various fields of activity.
In the kaleidoscope of events sometimes there is no time to stop and sum up, but today we would like to share some statistics about the work of G.O.R.K.I. Centre.
We have held 10 practical seminars, with more than 200 certified participants from 23 countries. We are open to new formats of educational events, so the G.O.R.K.I. Centre organised 5 business breakfasts and 4 meetings from the cycle of "Camin talk" in the beautiful interiors of the Kelch mansion.
The Centre's ambassadors also gave more than 30 public lectures and participated in 26 international conferences and forums. We have visited universities throughout Russia, with which we continue to develop co-operation (Moscow, St. Petersburg, Khabarovsk, Yekaterinburg, Omsk, Kazan, Gorno-Altaisk and others).
In the age of information, we are actively present in the media space, covering the current agenda in a timely manner and responding to audience requests. Thus, we have conducted 31 full-length interviews, recorded 49 podcasts on geopolitics and given more than 90 commentaries for major Russian and foreign media.
Fundamental research is also important for us, so we have prepared more than 20 analytical articles for specialised publications and agencies, written and translated the book "Requiem for Europe".
We also kept our pets: two boxer dogs, two ponies, two cats and even adopted one more kitten. And we also help Amur tigers.
Our sincere regards to all of you who has been with us this year, we will continue to do our best. We are always waiting for you at the G.O.R.K.I. Centre!

It was also Dominque de Villepin who in 2003 as Foreign Minister of France spoke out against the Iraq war at the UN Security Council.
He is very clear with his words on the Gaza scandal
I met him first in 1992 in Paris, a diplomat with backbone
And absolutely correct: the West has lost all legitimacy to speak about values
But at least France voted in favour of a humanitarian cease fire while neutral Austria has consistently voted against a cease fire for humanitarian reasons
Demonstrating for Gaza in Austria has become dangerous

The decline of Europe was visible and tangible for those with some logic and realism
Factories had turned into museums as I wrote in my book Mobility in Transition in 2020
And when I started working on the Requiem for Europe it was all about the disappearing rule of law and the rise of totalitarian behaviour
Europe is in deep trouble
And once the meat pots are empty the overall social climate will be very rude
Saying goodbye to Istanbul
Grateful for intense 48 hours
New encounters, precious Turkish hospitality
And the sobering conclusion that the world is heading towards tougher times
Remain human against all odds, that is the task for every day
For 48 hours in Istanbul meeting again Hassan Diab, former Prime Minister of Lebanon, discussing UN issues. Here together with Editor Beatriz Bissio from Uruguay
But multilateral diplomacy is moving east and south
Easier to debate the new multipolar reality at the Bosporus than at the Hudson river or Lake of Geneva.

Tonight we started our first Cinema Club
The weather is still mild and we enjoyed the movie, chips and popcorn
Warm regards to Osman in Kuwait, who launched that initiative
The presence of European mercenaries in Ukraine was harshly hit this week. Here comes the confirmation of reports that were ciruclating recently.
What will NATO do if there are no more volunteer western trainers for Ukraine? Force NATO soldiers? Military service might come more rapidly to Germany in case Defence Minister Pistorius replaces Chancellor Scholz. Germany is back to square one in dangerous mix of recession and aggression.

Michel Barnier, 4 times minister in French governments, twice EU commissioner, Brexit negotiator, running for President against Macron, now turns into the Prime Minister of Macron in tough times.
Personally I always enjoyed the conversations with Michel Barnier. I remember well when I mentioned to him that I do not like the term "deal" for the Brexit negotiations.
A deal is what gangsters do. Governments should work on an agreement. He looked at me a bit astonished and smiled...

Today we celebrated One Year of G.O.R.K.I
On September 15th we started our Do-tank
And it was truly from scratch in two beautiful but empty rooms. A lot of good things have happened and we made it happen
Merci dear Alexandra, Viktor, Daria, Diana and Arina.
And special thanks to Roman, Arkady and Alexey who support us in all media and organizational aspects.
This post below is a truly nice resume of what we have accomplished.
MORE TO COME
Truly extraordinarily powerful interview of Dominique de Villepin, former PM, on Gaza.
- France "no longer has a voice on the international scene", because of its "double-standards" and lack of action.
- France's internal silencing of what's happening in Gaza a "real scandal in terms of democracy", making France live in "absurdity" and resulting in it "fading away". France and the West have many levers to stop the war - stopping arms supplies and economic sanctions- "but we refuse to use these levers with arguments which are absolutely unreal culturally or intellectually speaking. Saying 'we need to let Israel fight its war to the end': but what end? What is the end?".
- France and the West will "foot the bill" for what's happening in terms of loss of credibility and legitimacy.
- "undoubtedly the biggest historical scandal since... I don't even dare to find a reference", calling it a war "not like the others since it is civilian populations that die".

Europe’s new normal: High energy bills, fading industry and one chance to fix it (Politico):
German manufacturers are being strangled. The EU is feeling the pinch. Mario Draghi on Monday warned the EU may be staring at ‘slow agony.’
- A plastic molding, Hans Keim Kunststoffe, notes their energy costs have doubled since the war and they are at a major disadvantage to overseas rivals.
- More broadly across the EU, output from key energy-intensive sectors like chemicals and steel is declining. Plants are shutting down. Industrial champions are announcing layoffs.
- Mario Draghi, the EU economic guru, offered a similarly dire message, using elevated energy bills to make his case for a massive overhaul of how Europe does business. “The moment is really worrisome,” he said while presenting his report. “We cannot ignore it any longer.”
- EU steel production in 2023 hit its lowest level since 1960
- EU in total has lost over 800,000 manufacturing jobs since the pandemic

Back to St.Petersburg I picked up my four-legged friends Winston and Jackie.

From the Bosporus to the Baltic Sea within a few hours.
Grateful that this is possible and that we could stroll at the beach altogether.

The FULL Statement
President Putin on the "permission" of the United States and Great Britain to use long range Western missiles on the territory of Russia: "There is an attempt to substitute concepts. Because we are not talking about allowing or prohibiting the Kiev regime to strike at Russian territory. It is already striking with the help of unmanned aerial vehicles and other means.
But when it comes to using high–precision long-range Western-made weapons, it's a completely different story. The fact is that, as I have already said, and any experts will confirm this (both here and in the West), the Ukrainian army is not able to strike with modern high-precision long-range systems of Western production. It can't do that. This is possible only with the use of satellite data, which Ukraine does not have — this is data only from satellites of either the European Union or the United States, in general, from NATO satellites. This is the first one.
The second, and very important, perhaps key, is that flight missions to these missile systems can, in fact, only be carried out by military personnel of NATO countries. Ukrainian servicemen cannot do this. And therefore, it is not a question of allowing the Ukrainian regime to strike Russia with these weapons or not to allow it. It's about deciding whether NATO countries are directly involved in a military conflict or not.
If this decision is made, it will mean nothing more than the direct participation of NATO countries, the United States, and European countries in the war in Ukraine. This is their direct involvement. And this, of course, significantly changes the very essence, the very nature of the conflict. This will mean that NATO countries, the United States, and European countries are at war with Russia. And if this is the case, then, bearing in mind the change in the very essence of this conflict, we will make appropriate decisions based on the threats that will be created to us."

Today, September 10, G.O.R.K.I. Centre had a Roundtable «Finland - Russia: from Partnership to Antagonism».
Participants discussed topics such as Finland's membership in NATO and changes in the state’s neutrality policy, the impact of EU anti‑Russian sanctions on the Finnish economy, the growth of pragmatism and hostility towards Russia among Finnish politicians.
Based on the results of the work, the participants prepared practical conclusions and recommendations, which will be presented to the attention of the relevant department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation.
Thank you for your outstanding work. We appreciate the efforts of all participants and look forward to welcoming you to our upcoming events at the Centre.

Alexander Nitzberg was a special guest of the discussion. Participants had an opportunity to ask Alexander Nitzberg about broadcasting foreign culture, role of translators, interpreters and language.
«The main characteristic of Russian literature is the impulse of freedom, a sense of freedom. Freedom in the absolute sense, in the West over the last 10 years it has become common to divide freedom, for example freedom of speech is real until you cross over someone else’s freedom. People who say that have not read Dostoyevsky, and if they have, they have not understood, because the freedom I speak of - has no beginning and no end…» - Alexander Nitzberg about the difference between Russian and Western literature.
Good morning
Yesterday this amazing surprise from friends in Altai arrived.
It is a song for me and about me.
Maxim Kazantsev wrote the lyrics, which you find below.
But the singer is his creation by artificial intelligence
I like this strong Russian voice, which expresses very well the desire to live.
My sincere thanks go to Maxim and Alexander and to all those who help me to find a new life in Russia, which is much more than a country. I call it Planet Russia
Have a good Sunday

Text:
Starting into the day on horseback is a true pleasure! Many thanks dear children, horses and Sergey for your company!

Good afternoon,
a busy week lies ahead for our G.O.R.K.I., may it be rich in fruitful exchange and new ideas.
We will start the week with a Kamin Talk in the company of the translator and author Alexander Nitzberg, who left Austria for Russia. He had arrived as a child with his parents coming from the USSR. One of the smartest men I met from Austria....
On Tuesday we meet the St.Petersburg Committee for International Relations and we will be hosting a Roundtable on the relations between Russia and Finland.
And in between there will be meetings with students, texts and interviews.
Today, 6th of September, a year ago I was on my way from Lebanon to Syria with the ponies, my household and helpful people. Our final destination was St.Petersburg. It was tough but thanks to the perfect organization by the Russian Embassies involved all went well. My sincere thanks go to all of you who helped the animals and me. Those ponies which travelled from Austria to France, then from Marseille to Lebanon and finally via Syria to a small village in Russia make a lot of children happy. We are grateful to enjoy our new lives - as ponies, dogs, cats and as Karin.
