What makes IELTS band 8 different from 7.5 and 7 in the speaking test? 🧐

When you get to the higher bands like 7 and up, the difference tends to be errors and complexity of ideas/grammar/vocabulary.

A Band 7 candidate 👉🏼 makes their ideas clear, uses accurate grammar/vocabulary most of the time and there aren’t any breakdowns in communication.

A Band 7.5 candidate 👉🏽 can present more complex ideas and use some more complex grammar/vocabulary when needed. This might contain some errors but meaning isn’t lost.

A Band 8.0 candidate 👉🏾 can present more complex ideas, use more complex grammar/vocabulary pretty freely and makes very few errors. Meaning isn’t lost.

This is very general as everyone is different but you get the idea.

#reflection_post (It's gonna be a long read)

I had a conversation with an actual writing and speaking IELTS examiner, who answered many of my questions. What you read in this post might even come as a surprise to even experienced IELTS instructors. So, it is a must-read.

Part 1 of the speaking test is not assessed, some instructors say. Is it true?

Answer
:  No. The whole performance is assessed. But, the exam gets progressively more difficult, which means that Part 3 is arguably the most important part.

2. Is it ok to correct yourself if you made a mistake in speaking? And how many times is the norm?

Answer
: It is alright to fix a mistake or two in your speaking. However, if you do it frequently, like lower-level candidates often do, it might affect your score.

3. How different examiners' private band descriptors are from those publicly available?

Answer
: There is not much difference. Our version is more specific.

4. Is it better to put the overview paragraph in T1 together with the intro or to separate them?

Answer
: No difference

5. Should you describe everything given in the graph/table/map/diagram?

Answer
: Yes. You should at least something about everything. Tables are probably the most difficult tasks, as they contain too much information.

6. This one is interesting. I asked if it is ok to write a report without an intro because I saw some reports by my friend Jurabek Sanokulov (also an IELTS instructor) without an intro and wanted to clarify whether it is ok to do so. The answer will surprise you.

Answer
: It might be ok. This is because there is nothing in the band descriptors about introduction paragraphs, apart from the part about the format. It is preferable to have one, but if you are running out of time, you might omit it as well to focus on more important paragraphs, for example the overview.

7. What happens if I could not complete my T1 report but finished my T2 essay? This happened to some of my students. While some wrote their intro and the overview only, others did not have details para 2.

Answer
: You will end up with a low score in T1. This is because your TA score is capped at band 4.0. (I think your CC score will be lowered too, as TA and CC are connected).

8. I heard that IELTS writing score is calculated by a computer . Is it true?

Answer
: Yes! We assess a candidate's essay/report and input the score for each criterion into a computer that will calculate the overall writing score. What is certain is that your score is rounded down. For example, if you get 7.0 8.0 8.0 8.0 for your T2, your score is rounded down to 7.5, not 8.0.

9. Are contractions allowed in writing?

Answer
: Yes, they are! It is totally ok to use contractions in IELTS writing. The same applies to phrasal verbs. You can use phrasal verbs if you need to.

10.When describing maps, is it
better to describe the first picture and then the second one, or talk about the changes initially and then unchanged features?

Answer: It does not really matter. As long as you paragraph your report logically, you should be good.

11. Is it ok to use the word 'interestingly' in a T1 report? FYI, I used to use this word until recently. Now, I know that I shouldn't.

Answer: No. It is a phrase that signifies opinion. No opinions in T1

___

We
also touched on a couple of situations test-takers might face. Let's look at them:

12: Task 2 is finished, but you have 12-15 minutes left for your T1. Skip the intro and start with the overview and do your best to complete the task. It is better than not having enough time to write your details para 2. In short, details2 > intro.

13: T1 and two paragraphs (intro and MB1)  of your T2 are finished, but you have around 5 minutes left. Jump to the conclusion. Again, incomplete essays are likely to get a lower score, but if your intro and MB1 are good enough, you might end up with an alright score. Yet, if you don't have a conclusion, then you are in trouble. All in all, conclusion > MB2.
