Soccer: FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022-Germany at Japan Yukihito Taguchi-Imagn Images Joshua Kimmich wants Germany to get back to its old, winning ways... Bayern Munich star Joshua Kimmich broke through with the German national team a few years after its peak performance at the 2014 World Cup. At that point, many just assumed that rampant success would be on the agenda for the German. Not so fast. It has not been a glorious run, but it has not been totally awful, either (there have been some periods of total ineptitude, though). For Kimmich, it has been a wild ride. “There were many, especially in the early stages. We were very successful back then, at EURO 2016 and then winning the Confederations Cup the following year. The period after that was, of course, negative, starting with the 2018 World Cup until March of last year. Those six years were rather mediocre, actually worse than mediocre,” Kimmich told kicker journalist Frank Linkesch (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “Germany reached the semifinals of every tournament from 2006 to 2016. If you haven’t reached the semifinals since 2018, you can certainly appreciate that things are now heading in the right direction. But that’s no guarantee that we’ll reach the semifinals at the World Cup. We saw at the Euros that progressing depends on many factors.”When asked about the future, Kimmich was cautiously optimistic. “Hope might be the wrong word, but it does give you renewed confidence in your own strength. Tournament preparation doesn’t begin two weeks before the start in some base camps, but rather on the way there – with the Nations League matches and the qualifiers. Our path to tournaments has never been consistently good in recent years,” said Kimmich.

Athletic Club v FC Barcelona - La Liga EA Sports Photo by Juan Manuel Serrano Arce/Getty Images This might never end... According to a report from Sport Bild journalist Christian Falk, Bayern Munich is meeting to talk over whether or not the new release clause attached to Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams: Nico Williams has extended his contract with Athletic Bilbao to 2035. This also sees his release clause increased by over 50%. Bayern now have a decision on their hands. The hierarchy in Munich has to hold internal discussions over whether the new release clause of €90m [£77.6m] is too high or not.Huh?There is no way, Williams turns around and transfers after this video, right?❤️ Nico Williams: “I am where I want to be, with my people, my . I decided with my ”.@AthleticClub pic.twitter.com/dslr0uQb4A— Fabrizio Romano (@FabrizioRomano) July 4, 2025This story can’t be true can it? Would Williams really ink a new deal and turnar ound just to leave a few weeks later? If you want to be further discouraged, check this out form Fabrizio Romano (via @iMiaSanMia): Nico Williams’ new deal at Athletic Club is worth over €10m net per year for the next 10 years. Bayern offered him a higher salary (€12m net per year) but he decided to stay in Bilbao after the deal with Barcelona collapsed due to registration issues. It seems like Bayern Munich needs some direction for this summer transfer window. Where does the club go next? With Bayern Munich scuffling to figure out its wing situation for the 2025/26 campaign, the club needs to really expand its list — and it might have with Real Madrid winger Rodrygo. Is that rumor legit...is it even possible? If not, Rodrygo, should Bayern Munich explore a move for RB Leipzig’s Xavi Simons. And what about Max Eberl’s vague statement about Kim Min-jae and João Palhinha? Let’s talk about all of that and more on this edition of the Bavarian Podcast Works — Weekend Warm-up Show on Patreon, Spotify, Acast, any leading podcast distributor, or below: Also, be sure to stay tuned to Bavarian Podcast Works for all of your up to date coverage on Bayern Munich and Germany. FC Bayern München v SGS Essen - Google Pixel Women’s Bundesliga Photo by Mark Wieland/Getty Images Turnover continues to be large at the Campus. It may perhaps seem a little to Bayern Munich fans like we are still in the middle of the footballing season, given the club is competing in the FIFA Club World Cup. But it is the summer, meaning there is a lot of upheaval happening around the teams competing in FIFA’s gift to Saudi Arabia. That applies to Bayern’s youth teams, as well. The U-23s are already in the middle of their pre-season preparations and the U-19s have recently joined them. With their start into pre-season preparations comes an article on the Bavarians’ official website about the pre-season preparations, including transfer updates. And there have been a lot of those updates so far. Here they are all listed:Head coach [Peter] Gaydarov’s team has seen several changes. Alexander Coenen, Baran Özmen, Elias Muteba, Valentin Yotov, Erion Rexhepi (all contract expiration), Nico Anand (Jahn Regensburg), Sejdo Durakov (RW Erfurt), Jason Eckl (on loan to SpVgg Unterhaching), Luca Stančič (Başakşehir FK), Can Paylan, and Iwinosa Uhuns (both FC Ingolstadt) have left the club. In total, 10 players have left the club permanently, while striker Eckl will return to Unterhaching , where he was already on loan last season. Without an exception, the aforementioned names were fringe players in the squad for whom a departure is probably the best for both the club and the player. The only one who could claim to be an exception to that rule is winger Durakov, who racked up over 1,000 minutes last season and shone from time to time. However, as brilliant as his best performances were, he so rarely had the form and fitness to back those up and usually underwhelmed. A move away for him is also probably a good thing. The U-19s will go through a batch of friendlies this summer, culminating in the annual friendly against the Bayern World Squad on the 26th of July. The season proper then starts in the DFB Youth League on August 2nd/3rd.

1. FC Heidenheim - Werder Bremen Photo by Harry Langer/picture alliance via Getty Images No, Europe, no Ole Werner, no deal. Werder Bremen fans have had to make due with mediocrity in recent times. After an exciting run in the late 2000s, the once formidable club has been reduced to regular midtable finishes, with few hints of any more being possible. Things at the club reached a low point in 2021, when the club was shockingly relegated to the 2. Bundesliga, but the club quickly found their way back to the Bundesliga and their usual mid table finishes. This 2024/25 season seemed to be the one to change things, as Die Werderaner enjoyed a strong start to the season, but the team’s Rückrunde was poor and cost them a European spot. It also likely cost them the services of exciting coach Ole Werner, who asked to leave after supposedly not being backed enough and promptly went to Rasenballsport Leipzig. But new head coach Horst Steffen proved he could do miracles in Sv Elversberg, not only seeing the club from a town of under 13,000 residents promoted to the 2. Bundesliga but getting them within inches of promotion to Germany’s top flight- missing out via the relegation playoff- with a team comprised of loan players. Part of that miracle was Paul Wanner, who helped Elversberg comfortably stay up in the 2023/2024 season a newly promoted team on loan from Bayern Munich. However, he also broke Elversberg hearts by assisting the winner from Heidenheim in the play off. Per Bild, via @iMiaSanMia, however, this would not be the last time Wanner would break Steffen’s heart, as the newspaper reports that Wanner has rejected a potential loan move to Bremen:New Werder Bremen coach Horst Steffen has spoken to Paul Wanner, with whom he worked in Elversberg, to convince him to move to Bremen. Wanner, however, currently prefers other options and would like to play in Europe. A move to Werder is currently unlikely.Markopolo will certainly approve of this decision. Whether a team with European football will come along and try to sign Wanner is the question, however. How long will the Germany U-21 international hold out for a bigger team?

CR Flamengo v FC Bayern München: Round Of 16 - FIFA Club World Cup 2025 Photo by Michael Reaves/Getty Images A proper test to challenge Bayern’s mettle Media Match information:Location: Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta, Georgia, United StatesKickoff: 12:00 PM Local time (EDT), 9:00 AM PDTBayern Munich bested Brazilian team Flamengo in the last 16 of the FIFA Club World Cup which earned them a tie against the in-form Paris Saint-Germain, who won the UEFA Champions League Final at Bayern’s ground just over a month ago. The Bavarians did win against the Parisians in the group phase of that tournament, with Kim Min-jae’s header the decider in a tight affair. Things have changed since then, and Bayern is somewhat inferior to the European champions, but they’ll certainly give them a run for their money. Media Team newsNo room for errors here, so a full-strength squad will be needed. It’s near enough the same lineup that was fielded against Flamengo. [From the defence up to the attack, left to right] Manuel Neuer starts in goal, with a backline of Josip Stanišić, Dayot Upamecano, Jonathan Tah, and Konrad Laimer shielding him. Joshua Kimmich and Aleksandar Pavlović are the two midfielders, while Kingsley Coman, Jamal Musiala, and Michael Olise act as the supporting cast for Harry Kane in front.Bavarian Podcast Works — Flagship Show: Season 7, Episode 56Bayern Munich has a massive challenge ahead in the Club World Cup as it prepares to face Paris Saint-Germain, but there is a lot more going on than that these days. Buckle up, so we can talk about all of the latest, greatest news involving the Bavarians. This is what we have on tap for this edition of the Bavarian Podcast Works Show: Bayern Munich could be getting serious about Liverpool FC attacker Luis Díaz. Would the left-wing be a fit...and affordable? Transfermarkt values the attacker at €70 million, but how much would Bayern Munich pay?Where do things stand with Bayern Munich and VfB Stuttgart’s Nick Woltemade? Why did Bayern Munich — allegedly — pitch a last minute offer to Borussia Dortmund for Jamie Gittens. Bayern Munich will take on Paris Saint-Germain in the Club World Cup and there is...bad blood? Let’s talk about why this match up will tell us about the mettle of the Bavarians at this stage of the season.
