CR Flamengo v FC Bayern München: Round Of 16 - FIFA Club World Cup 2025 Photo by Francois Nel/Getty Images Intense game...but it’s only going to get tougher! Bayern Munich treated fans as they came away with a 4-2 victory against Brazilian side Flamengo courtesy of goals from Harry Kane and an unbelievable strike from Leon Goretzka right before the second half.Speaking post-game, Goretzka said (as captured by @iMiaSanMia), “It was a very intense game. Both teams wanted to press high and play man against man. In these temperatures, it’s tough. But it was fun to fight like that, and we’re happy to have advanced to the next round. We knew it would be a very physical game. Flamengo also like to play out from the back, and they do that well. But that always gives you the chance to win the ball high up the pitch. We did that well and scored goals. The atmosphere in the stadium was great again, and it was important that we stay calm and keep the ball. We could have done even better at some points.” Goretzka also highlighted the difficulty that lies ahead as Bayern are set to face PSG in the quarter-finals: “Now we’ll face the reigning Champions League winners. It’s sure to be a tough game again. We’ve already played against them once and won this season, and we are looking forward to the game.”Goretzka’s strike today was phenomenal, much like Bayern’s unforgiving performance. The Rekordmeister will look to build on this performance against PSG next week. What did you think of the game or Goretzka’s goal? Will Bayern beat the European champions next week? Heat, goals, passion: Bayern beat Flamengo and look forward to PSG

FC Bayern München v Paris Saint-Germain - UEFA Champions League 2024/25 League Phase MD5 Photo by Marco Steinbrenner/DeFodi Images via Getty Images Bayern will hardly look to surrender against the European champions. Ahead of Bayern Munich’s match against Flamengo, Paris Saint Germain took on Inter Miami and came out convincing 4-0 victors. Ergo, Bayern knew that overcoming Flamengo in the Round of 16 would see them face PSG in the quarterfinals.Bayern did hold up their end of the bargain, though, and so will face PSG for the first time since November’s Champions League match, which the Bavarians won 1-0 through a header from Kim Min-Jae. Ousmane Dembélé even got a silly red card, prompting the press to get on his back for letting his team down again. How things change, eh? Now PSG are Champions League winners and Dembélé is one of the favorites for the Ballon D’or.Still, @iMiaSanMia captures star striker Harry Kane’s insistence that Bayern can win the match:“Another tough game,” the England captain said of the upcoming tie after the wina against Flamengo. “PSG had an amazing season. We played them earlier in the season and won. It will be difficult but we know we can beat anyone when we’re at our level. We’ll recover now and then give it our all.”Can Bayern stun the European Champions? We’ll see.

CR Flamengo v FC Bayern München: Round Of 16 - FIFA Club World Cup 2025 Photo by Richard Sellers/Sportsphoto/Allstar via Getty Images AND INTO THE QUARTERFINALS WE GO! Bayern Munich faced Flamengo in the Round of 16 of the FIFA Club World Cup. This was certainly going to be difficult, owing to Flamengo’s quality.... and the South American tendency to play rough. What ensued was an entertaining game, in which Bayern dominated, not in possession but in goals. And flash news; Harry Kane finally registered a brace! Let’s look at some of the talking points from the game, as Bayern further advances with a 4-2 win to meet Paris Saint-Germain. Bad refereeing is not going to go away anytime soon so...We adapt. The game easily had some of the most shambolic refereeing the CWC has seen. Calls that should have clearly been reds, fouls that should have been yellows and unwarranted cards in instances that they were never needed — this is clearly a Michael Oliver masterclass. Arguably, Bayern too played a little too casually — tackles a little heavier than needed and certainly a hint of carelessness together made it easier for the cards to be handed out. Further into the tournament, there is little to no guaranteeing that the officiation is going to be fair. Certainly, the team needs to exert a lot more caution.Pressing wins games. Period. The press may not have been the most effective but it was certainly needed. The fact of the matter is that Bayern did not press the entire 90. Their buildup was far too slow, too. There were multiple errors in their game. Yet, if you look at the end product, the goals came when the press excelled. In fact, every attacker and defender pressed with their lives in these circumstances, and that is precisely how Bayern walked out with four goals. Not by smartness, or luck, or even a poor Flamengo performance — just cold, hard pressing. The football never had to be beautiful to win games — it just needs to be sensible team effort. Pressing right might win us this tournament. A case for Konrad LaimerYes, Sir Harry Kane registered a brace, but ever bothered to notice who was behind all these goals?Man, I love Konrad Laimer. I will talk about this man for hours on end but for now, let me simply point out why he was the best player on the pitch tonight. Goal #3: Kane tries to free himself from the defenders around him and clearly Gnabry just gets in his way. Next logical decision is to pass to a clearly open Konrad Laimer. Laimer, in his usual style, passes to Olise. Now, notice Laimer’s position. He’s already run into the box with the ball at his feet. Loses the ball, yes, but that lands at Goretzka’s feet who takes a gorgeous shot that leads to the goal. The responsibility is to not simply pass the ball and move on, but to support the guy whom you just passed to and Laimer exemplifies this. Goal #4:Musiala gets the ball, but loses it almost in seconds. Guess who comes in here — Laimer rushes in, steals the ball, immediately passes to Kimmich, continues to run forward while Kimmich gets it to Kane and the goal is scored. Defending masterclass — did someone lose the ball? Retrieving the ball is only half the picture, the pass following it makes all the difference.Laimer has the work rate of a yesteryear midfielder like Javi Martinez and is perhaps the only man with the level of positional intelligence that can try close the massive Thomas Muller sized hole in Bayern. Additionally, his partnership with Olise is simply too valuable to the attack. Now, that, is what a MOTM looks like.Physicality in the attack is the need of the hourNo way this team plans on going to meet PSG after getting beaten down like this.Bayern desperately needs muscle, and this game showed clearly why a muscle man like Nick Woltemade is needed in attack. Barring, perhaps Leroy Sane and Harry Kane (who will forever be marked by 3 defenders at minimum), no one in the attacking side of things has the muscle to handle more physical teams. When you desperately need a guy like Jamal Musiala for his…

FC Bayern München Training Session - FIFA Club World Cup 2025 Photo by A. Scheuber/FC Bayern via Getty Images Doing so will certainly be an enormous challenge. Thomas Müller’s time as a player at Bayern Munich is nearly up. Ahead of the Round of 16 match against Flamengo, which could be his last match for the club if the game results in a loss, Müller sat down with DAZN to discuss the club and his impending departure. Asked how Bayern could possibly replace him, not just in a sporting sense, but as a leader, communicator and entertainer, he acknowledged it would not be easy:“The club will certainly have to find solutions,” Bayern’s record appearance holder mused, as captured by @iMiaSanMia. “They probably won’t find anyone that will adequately replace me [laughs]. They’re already scouting. I’ve always tried to provide a bit of entertainment.”Truly, how does one replace an iconic player such as Müller, who has been at the club since youth level and spent 17 years as a part of the senior team? The road to replacing him will be long and arduous, but the club has decided to embark on that difficult journey.Looking to get ready for Bayern Munich’s big Club World Cup showdown with Flamengo? SL Benfica v FC Bayern München: Group C - FIFA Club World Cup 2025 Photo by Jose Breton/Pics Action/NurPhoto via Getty Images Laimer is an industrious option for Vincet Kompany, but he is more often used at right back. Bayern Munich’s squad could still look a bit different come the end of the summer transfer window, but Vincent Kompany has had to navigate his way through the FIFA Club World Cup so far with a handful of injuries to his squad. To date, Bayern’s main incoming business has been bringing in Jonathan Tah from Bayer Leverkusen and Tom Bischof from TSG Hoffenheim and going in the other direction, Leroy Sané becomes a Galatasaray player as of July 1st.A lot of movement can take place between now and Bayern’s first competitive match of the season, which comes in the form of the Franz Beckenbauer Cup, or DFL-Supercup vs. VfB Stuttgart on August 16th. Subsequently, they open up their 2025/26 Bundesliga campaign on August 22nd against RB Leipzig.Konrad Laimer is one of a small handful of players who, going into this summer, was a player the club felt could either be sold, or stay. It now looks like the Austrian international is set to stay, but where, exactly Kompany will most utilize him remains to be seen depending on the personnel he’ll have available come August 16th and 22nd. Per information from kicker’s Georg Holzner (via @iMiaSanMia), Laimer himself has a preference to playing more as a central midfielder this season as opposed to a right-back or right wing-back. This could be rather difficult for Kompany to accommodate, already having Joshua Kimmich, Leon Goretzka, Aleksandar Pavlović, and Bischof in the midfield ranks, all of whom play as central midfielders. FC Augsburg v FC Bayern München - Bundesliga Photo by Harry Langer/DeFodi Images/DeFodi via Getty Images Of course, Laimer’s track record with former club RB Leipzig and the Austrian national team lends itself to showing that he can very much be a center mid, but it’s just a matter of how often that could possibly take place at Bayern under Kompany. Ever since joining Bayern from Leipzig back in the summer of 2023, Laimer has made a total of 28 appearances across all competitions at either center mid or center defensive mid, as per transfermarkt. This includes the managerial stints of Julian Nagelsmann, Thomas Tuchel, and now Kompany. Most of his appearances as a central midfielder came in the 2023/24 season in a relatively even split of before and after Nagelsmann was sacked and then replaced by Tuchel. CR Flamengo v FC Bayern München: Round Of 16 - FIFA Club World Cup 2025 Photo by Richard Sellers/Sportsphoto/Allstar via Getty Images On to the next round! An extremely rough match up today saw Bayern Munich advance to the next round, after dominating CR Flamengo in a 4-2 win. Here’s our awards for the game. Jersey Swap: JorginhoThe Italian international made a name for himself at his new club, and proved to be a good signing today versus Bayern. He was critical for Flamengo today, with a goal and multiple contributions on the pitch. His experience from his time at Arsenal and Chelsea have definitely been a factor in his success at the Brasilian club, and it looks like the fans love him too. Gerson deserves a shout out for this award too.Der Kaiser: Konrad LaimerLaimer has had his fair share of criticism over the last few matches, most calling his game shaky and inconsistent. Today, however, Laimer was the rock for Bayern’s defense. Upamecano was a close second, but the Austrian international got the edge over him with some key passes and duels.Fußballgott: Leon GoretzkaDespite being slowly pushed out of his own club, Goretzka has refused to back down from the challenge of putting in a good performance. He had a much more solid performance than Joshua Kimmich today during the time he was on, and the only reason he was subbed out (at least I hope it was the only reason) was the fear of a second yellow and a suspension. Der Bomber: Michael OliseWe find ourselves here yet again (at the very least, its not Kimmich, don’t worry). Olise may not have put in an all-time performance today, but it was still very good nonetheless. His contributions to the attack gave him the edge over his colleagues on the pitch. Gnabry, Coman, and Musiala all had good games, but not better than Olise. And the less we say about Leroy Sané, the better..Meister of the Match: Harry KaneThe Englishman is back on track baby. Kane netted two goals today, earning himself this title (and Der Bomber too, actually). He was key in Bayern’s attacking third, and found himself contributing to the defense too (classic Kane). All in all, Vincent Kompany’s number one striker is finally back in action, and fans will hope he carries this on in the next round. What do you think of our awards? Did we miss out on anyone? FC Bayern Muenchen - Training Session Photo by A. Beier/Getty Images for FC Bayern The ex-player is torn... If there is one person who will be switching between being unable to watch Bayern Munich vs. Flamengo and sitting on the edge of his seat, unable to takes his eyes off the screen, it will be Rafinha, a former player for both clubs. We had already heard from Rafinha here, but he had even more to say about the match. “Flamengo know what they’re up against. Bayern have to respect Flamengo; they can be dangerous. FC Bayern have the better individual players, but Flamengo also have some of the best individual players in South America. I think Flamengo have a chance. But with all due respect to Chelsea, Bayern are a different caliber, they’re on a different level. I’m excited to see how Flamengo will adapt. For me, Flamengo is the best team in South America. They like possession and dominance, and that makes them dangerous,” Rafinha told FCBayern.com (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “Both clubs obviously hold a big place in my heart. I’m looking forward to this big game. But I was at Bayern for much longer, of course, eight and a half years. I have very good friends on both teams, but my best friends play for Bayern. I’m in contact with Thomas and Manu almost every day. I played with Manu for 14 years. He’s my best friend in football”Clearly, the former defender is going through some mixed emotions. SL Benfica v FC Bayern München: Group C - FIFA Club World Cup 2025 Photo by Alex Livesey - FIFA/FIFA via Getty Images Every match feels like Thomas Müller’s last Bayern Munich’s route to the final of the FIFA Club World Cup is not one for the faint of heart, as their first opponent in the knockout rounds is a Flamengo side that only lost thrice since Filipe Luis took over. Bayern will want to get past the Brazilian team and secure a Quarterfinal berth. The Bavarians’ exploits in the group stage turned out to be a turbulent one as the teams saw mixed results that sentenced them to a second placed finish and joined all of the stronger teams on this side of the bracket. FC Bayern München Training Session And Press Conference - FIFA Club World Cup 2025 Photo by F. Noever/FC Bayern via Getty Images Momentum for Aznou’s departure seems to be building... In the summer of 2024, Adam Aznou signed a three year contract with Bayern Munich as one of the brightest young players at the club, signaling that the club and he had come to a consensus on how to approach his development moving forward. Half a year later, Aznou decided that the plan was not being followed well and forced through a loan move away to Real Valladolid. 12 months later, it seems that Aznou plans to leave permanently. The youngster has only played eight minutes in the FIFA Club World Cup amid an injury crisis at left back, signaling that head coach Vincent Kompany simply does not think he is ready for a significant role in the team. Per SPORT1 reporter Stefan Kumberger, as captured by @iMiaSanMia, that is an assessment academy coaches simply cannot understand: At the FC Bayern Campus, they’re surprised that Adam Aznou is being left out and not given game time, given the level of his talent. Aznou is unhappy with the lack of playing time, given that he’s an international player [for Morocco] and that Bayern bosses once gave him significant hopes of a perspective with the first team. A departure this summer is not ruled out. Several Spanish clubs have enquired about the player, but Bayern did not actively put him on the market as things stand.BFW AnalysisWhat many may not know about Aznou’s time at the Club World Cup is that he turned down an international call up to the Moroccan national team to be in America. It just seems as if Kompany simply sees Aznou’s current development differently than the former FC Barcelona youth player does. Aznou thought he was ready, Kompany does not. And Aznou puts a lot of weight on getting game time, so if he cannot earn minutes he naturally decides to leave. Sometimes it is that easy for differences to develop.
