now that it says the transaction is in the mempool, the option to abandon transaction is greyed out

Go to transaction, right click on the transaction and it should give you a list of options one being abandon transaction.

If it has 0 confirmations you should be able to abandon it.

A few months back I was sending a transaction, after hitting send I ment to minimize the window but instead closed it.

After abandoning the transaction the coins were back in my balance but it took a day or two to resolve for me to use the wallet again.

Let me look for the issue I submitted when this happened to me

8.22 by default ignores below 1000 sat/byte. So miners running default 8.22 will ignore your tx

Only if fee is small. If you pay 1000 sat/byte which i am not willing to do since I make hourly txs they go quick.

this worries me that it takes hours for a seemingly small transaction to be picked up in the blockchain. DGB's speed is such a huge asset compared to others.

I'm also unclear on why the new rate is so high considering the volume we push through...doesn't seem like it's justified, but admittedly I know very little about the why's and for's of DGB.

I think it was cool that DigiByteCoin X account was brought up on stage and recognized even if they didn’t speak. I’ve seen Joel interact with DigiByteCoin account and vice versa. I think the space had good potential to talk more about collaboration in the but Justin Bons kept talking over everyone and talked about Solana is the network that can do it all.
