Chelsea captain Reece James’ latest hamstring injury is in the other leg he had operated on last year and ruled him out for four months
Head coach Enzo Maresca revealed on Wednesday night that the right-back has had a scan and is already getting “better and better, day by day”.
While Chelsea have deliberately not set a date for his return in order to avoid putting pressure on him, there is optimism over his recovery. The results of the tests were good, indicating it is not a significant strain.
This is the ninth time James has been ruled out with a hamstring injury in the past five years. He went 18 months without completing 90 minutes in the Premier League between April 2023 and October 2024.
On the eve of Chelsea’s Conference League game against German side Heidenheim, Maresca admitted that part of the issues James faces is coping mentally with suffering nine hamstring injuries in four years.

𝐎𝐅𝐅𝐈𝐂𝐈𝐀𝐋: Sol Gordon has signed his first professional contract with Chelsea shortly after celebrating his 17th birthday. ✍️
Gordon joined the club during his Under-8s season after progressing through the development centre programme and has moved through the age groups since, joining Hassan Sulaiman’s Under-18s squad full-time for the current campaign.
Last season he was part of the Chelsea Under-16s side which won the Premier League National Tournament and played a pivotal role in the Under-17 Premier League Cup victory, beating Wolverhampton Wanderers in the final at Molineux.
This season Gordon has continued to progress, scoring eight goals so far across the Under-18 Premier League and Under-18 Premier League Cup, most recently hitting a brace in Saturday’s 4-1 win at Millwall in the latter competition.

Sanchez - 5: Not much to do for most of the game, should have saved Ayew’s penalty.
Fofana - 6.5: Did well on the right side of defense, usually had the better of his man and showed composure.
Colwill - 6: Quiet game but was there when called upon, no complaints.
Badiashile - 8.5: Best defender on the pitch by far, always on the front foot and won the ball back many times to start attacks. Also showcased his impressive passing range.
Cucurella - 8: Tenacious as always working tirelessly both on and off the ball. Good cross to Jackson which led to Enzo’s winner.
Caicedo - 7: Not the centre of attention today as he has been in recent weeks but was always there when called upon to protect the defense and release pressure.
Enzo - 9 (MOTM): Classic performance. Assisted Jackson’s goal and scored the winner by being in the right place, and pressed Leicester all game, winning the ball back on a few occasions.
Palmer - 7: Targeted by opposition as he has often been this season, but used his free role to drop deeper and dictate the play with smart touches and excellent passing, often combining with Cucurella.
Madueke - 5: Disappointing game, often involved but couldn’t find the right passes or shot other than his goal which was disallowed for Cucurella’s tight offside. Less said about his block on Palmer’s shot, the better.
Felix - 6: Decent on the ball, showed his dribbling ability in particular but lacked decisiveness.
Jackson - 8.5: Beautifully taken opening goal following impressive perseverance, and forced a save with his header which allowed Enzo to get the winner. Leicester defenders had no answer to his speed in behind.
