🇸🇩 The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) used drones to attack civilian areas and Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) bases in Port Sudan on May 4 in the RSF’s first attack on the city.

Port Sudan is the de facto capital of the SAF and at least 250,000 displaced civilians reside in the city. Port Sudan hosts Sudan’s primary airport, army headquarters, and a seaport.

A spokesman for the Sudanese military said that RSF drones hit an ammunition warehouse in the Osman Digna airbase, causing explosions and briefly halting air traffic. The attack also hit a cargo warehouse and civilian installations. The attack did not result in any casualties, according to the SAF.

The RSF used "suicide drones" according to an SAF statement, which did not specify the type of drone. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has sent numerous batches of drones to the RSF since at least July 2024.

The UAE has backed the RSF to protect its economic and political influence in Sudan and the Red Sea through its ties with the RSF leader.

The SAF reportedly "bombed" a UAE-operated cargo plane delivering weapons and drones to the RSF at an airport in Nyala, western Sudan, on May 3.

This is quite consequential.

China, Japan, South Korea and the countries of ASEAN just issued a joint statement in which they take a unified stance against "escalating trade protectionism", a clear reference to Trump's tariffs.

They write that their common "policy priority" is "to reinforce long-term resilience" of the region, which given the policies they detail clearly means building financial and trade infrastructure that aims at reducing their exposure to the US.

The statement outlines a comprehensive strategy to strengthen trade between the signatories, enhance local currency bond markets and reduce dependence on Western financial institutions (via, for instance, the expansion of the Chiang Mai Initiative Multilateralisation, CMIM).

Particularly notable is their explicit support for the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) - the world's largest trade agreement that includes all the signatories but not the US.

All in all, Trump is achieving the unthinkable: bringing East and Southeast Asia together in an economic bloc that seeks to derisk itself from America.
