🇲🇽 🇨🇺 🇺🇸 2 Mexican Navy ships laden with humanitarian aid dock in Cuba as US blockade sparks energy crisis

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said Thursday that as soon as the ships return, “we will send more support of different kinds.” Her administration noted that it still plans to send 1,500 tons of beans and powdered milk.

Sheinbaum has previously said the humanitarian aid would be sent while diplomatic maneuvering to resume oil supplies is underway. She says Mexico has told the United States it seeks to promote peaceful dialogue and ensure Cuba “can receive oil and its derivatives for its daily operations.”

Cuba has also reduced bank hours and suspended cultural events, while fuel distribution companies have said that sales only will be made in dollars and limited to 20 liters (5.28 gallons) per user.

In addition to severe blackouts, Cuban officials say that U.S. sanctions, which increased under Trump’s second term, cost the country more than $7.5 billion between March 2024 and February 2025.

🇫🇷🇩🇪 Before the failure of the Future Combat Air System (FCAS) fighter jet program, came the failure of the Main Ground Combat System (MGCS)

The MGCS is a joint Franco-German project aimed to create the 6th generation of Main Battle Tanks and replace France's Leclercs and Germany Leopard A2s

The same infighting over which country's defense manufacturers should have primacy in the development of the MGCS led to it being pushed to 2045 which is far too late for the current needs of the French and German armies who expect a conflict with Russia in the next 5-6 years.

While officially the MGCS is still being developed, France and Germany have went their separate ways in terms of new tank development, creating the Leclerc Evolution (unveiled at Eurosatory in 2024) and the Leopard 3 which aim to replace the aging tank fleets and cover for the delays of the MGCS program.

🇺🇸 🪖 Marine declared dead after falling off USS Iwo Jima in Caribbean Sea

Lance Cpl. Chukwuemeka E. Oforah, 21, of Florida, was declared dead on Tuesday following a 72-hour search and rescue operation, according to a II Marine Expeditionary Force news release Thursday.

Oforah was a rifleman assigned to Battalion Landing Team, 3rd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, and deployed with the Iwo Jima Amphibious Ready Group and the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit (Special Operations Capable).

He was reported falling overboard Saturday evening, according to the release.

The search and rescue involved the Iwo Jima’s 7-meter small boat and surface rescue swimmer teams; two U.S. Navy MH-60 Sierra and two MH-60 Romeo helicopters; a Marine Corps AH-1Z Viper helicopter and a UH-1Y Venom helicopter; a Navy P-8 Poseidon; two Air Force HC-130J Combat King IIs; and an MQ-9 Reaper drone, according to the release.

Economic struggles, natural disasters, and a low fertility rate (0.88 children per woman in 2025) contribute to the crisis. The population is aging rapidly, with 24.6 percent over 65 and just 2.9 percent under 5. Poverty is rampant (37.3 percent), and the island remains a net exporter of people, not a magnet for immigrants. The population is projected to fall below three million by 2033.

Here’s what happened in El Paso per multiple people briefed

The Pentagon planned to use a high-energy, counter-drone laser without having properly coordinated with the FAA first about potential risks to civilian flights

The Pentagon has been testing this tech for a while now in more remote areas and FAA and Pentagon officials had been scheduled to meet February 20 to review potential impacts and mitigation measures for a test of the laser system

But for unclear reasons (perhaps there was a drone incursion, which happen multiple x per day) the Pentagon sought to deploy the system sooner around El Paso, prompting the FAA to impose the temporary flight restriction until proper coordination could occur. The 10-day restriction would have expired on February 21, one day after DoD and the FAA were set to meet.

The FAA did not tell the WH it was closing the airspace

A source familiar with the timeline of events said that the US military did use the laser technology around El Paso this week— to shoot down four mylar balloons. That contributed to the decision by the FAA to shut down local airspace until the aforementioned proper coordination could occur.

And yet another update: the Pentagon allowed CBP to use this technology after loaning it to them in recent weeks, people familiar with the matter said. Defense personnel were present at the time CBP used it to shoot down balloons this week, per one of the sources.

I have just finished meeting with Prime Minister Netanyahu, of Israel, and various of his Representatives.

It was a very good meeting, the tremendous relationship between our two Countries continues.

There was nothing definitive reached other than I insisted that negotiations with Iran continue to see whether or not a Deal can be consummated.

If it can, I let the Prime Minister know that will be a preference. If it cannot, we will just have to see what the outcome will be.

Last time Iran decided that they were better off not making a Deal, and they were hit with Midnight Hammer — That did not work well for them.

Hopefully this time they will be more reasonable and responsible.

Additionally, we discussed the tremendous progress being made in Gaza, and the Region in general. There is truly PEACE in the Middle East.

Secretary of War Pete Hegseth today called on defense chiefs and other senior military leaders from 34 Western Hemisphere countries to unite in deterrence against bad actors who may already be operating in, or working to encroach upon, the region.

Convened by Air Force Gen. Dan Caine, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and held in downtown Washington, the daylong, first-of-its-kind Western Hemisphere Chiefs of Defense Conference focused on regional security cooperation against narco-terrorism and other criminal enterprises throughout the hemisphere, while also analyzing common security priorities between allies and partner nations.

"The United States is asserting, reestablishing and enforcing the Trump corollary of the Monroe Doctrine," Hegseth explained.

"Yes, policing is important [and] enforcing is important, but military power is [also] important," Hegseth said, adding that the countries represented during the day's conference must work together to combat and dismantle narco-terrorism and drug trafficking cartels in the Western Hemisphere.

"We need to build those bonds of partnership to defeat the challenges to our security and our sovereignty," he added. "So, as you might say, we can make the Americas great again."

🇫🇷🇩🇪 European rocket maker ArianeGroup is in talks with Germany and France to develop a new ballistic missile that can hit targets several thousand kilometers away with hypersonic warheads.

“We are talking about a range of at least 1,000 kilometers,” Vincent Pery, director of defence programs at ArianeGroup, told reporters in Munich. “We can go to 2,000 kilometers, we can go to 3,000 kilometers,”

Pery said it would be up to European leaders to decide what range was needed and how to incorporate it into their militaries.

He pointed to Russia’s war against Ukraine and the conflicts in the Middle East as examples of how modern warfare has entered a new phase of ballistic missile attacks. Pery said development and production of the new weapon would take a few years.

Europe’s defense and space capabilities will be key topics at this year’s Munich Security Conference, which will kick off Friday with the opening speech of Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

ArianeGroup, a joint venture of Airbus SE and Safran SA, describes itself as Europe’s only ballistic actor.

The company is lead contractor for the Ariane 6 heavy launcher for the European Space Agency, which provides the continent’s only sovereign access to space.

ArianeGroup is also prime contractor for France’s M51 strategic ballistic missile system, deployed on the submarines of the French Strategic Oceanic Force.

Russia is preparing to ship oil and petroleum products to Cuba as “humanitarian aid,” despite US President Donald Trump’s threats to impose additional tariffs on countries that supply fuel to the island, The Moscow Times reported on February 12, citing Russian media.

Russia’s embassy in Havana told a Russian media outlet that the delivery is expected in the near future, though officials did not disclose volumes. The move comes as Cuba faces a deepening fuel crisis, with imports largely halted for nearly a month and reserves close to exhaustion.

Analysts cited by Russian outlets said Cuba could last no more than about 20 days without new imports. Mexico, which sent the last cargo on January 9, reportedly froze exports after Trump’s warnings, while Venezuela—previously the second-largest supplier stopped shipments after it’s leader Nicolas Maduro was detained by the US on January 3.

The Moscow Times noted that Russia’s last major delivery to Cuba took place in February 2025, when 100,000 tons of crude were shipped under a $60 million state loan approved by Putin. At Cuba’s average consumption of around 37,000 barrels per day, experts said such volumes would cover only several weeks without strict rationing.
