📝 — The deadline set by the ultra-Orthodox for Netanyahu to enact a law exempting them from military service expired last night, if they abide by their warnings, they will resign, the government will collapse, and elections will be held.
➡️Netanyahu's task now appears to be to hold them back by suggesting progress in internal negotiations until the end of July, the date of the Knesset's summer recess. At that point, his government will not fall until the winter (a government cannot be brought down during the Knesset's recess).
🇺🇸📚 Religious Education Lost at the Supreme Court. But It’s Winning Everywhere Else.
The tied vote sets no national precedent, leaving open the possibility that the court, which has expanded the role of religion in other cases, could take up the issue again later with its full conservative majority.
On the same day that the Supreme Court rejected government support for religious education in charter schools, the House narrowly passed an all-encompassing piece of domestic policy legislation that could create, for the first time, a federal school voucher program. The bill now heads to the Senate, where the voucher program has significant support.
Nearly 80 percent of private school students attend a religiously affiliated school.
Riding a wave of pandemic dissatisfaction with public education, 10 states now operate private-school choice programs that are available to all or nearly all students, up from just two states in the 2022-23 school year. Five more states — Alabama, Idaho, Louisiana, Tennessee and Wyoming — are set to begin similar programs next school year, according to FutureEd, an education think tank at Georgetown University that has tracked legislation.
The Supreme Court allowed school vouchers to be used for religious education in 2002. The court said that vouchers do not violate the establishment clause of the First Amendment, which prohibits the government from establishing religion, because parents act as intermediaries and can choose from an array of school options, both secular and religious.

🇨🇳 Devoured: How sand mining devastated China's largest freshwater lake [2021]
Over two decades, dredging ships have sucked massive amounts of sand from the bed and shores of Poyang Lake in the eastern Chinese province of Jiangxi, drastically altering the ability of its ecosystem to function.
Decades of mass urbanisation in China have fuelled demand for sand to make glass, concrete and other materials used in construction. The most desirable sand for industry comes from rivers and lakes rather than deserts and oceans. Much of the sand used to build the country's megacities has come from Poyang, China's largest freshwater lake.
Low water levels mean farmers have less water for irrigation, while also shrinking habitats for birds and fish.
President Xi Jinping once described Poyang Lake as a vital "kidney" filtering the country's water supply. Today, it looks very different from two decades ago.

🇺🇸🇨🇳 The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Michigan today announced federal charges against Yunqing Jian, 33, and Zunyong Liu, 34, a couple from China who are accused of smuggling a fungus described as a “dangerous biological pathogen” into the United States.
Mr. Liu has been charged with conspiracy, smuggling goods, false statements, and visa fraud after it is alleged he smuggled a fungus called Fusarium Graminearum through Detroit Metropolitan Airport, so that he and his girlfriend, Ms. Jian could further study it in a laboratory at the University of Michigan.
Fusarium Graminearum, described in scientific journals as a “potential agroterrorism weapon”, can cause a disease in wheat, barley, maize and rice that can wipe out crops and lead to vomiting and liver damage if consumed, with it responsible for “billions of dollars in economic losses worldwide each year.”
The complaint further alleges that Mr. Liu and Ms. Jian received funding from the Chinese government for their research into the fungus while in China, with Ms. Jian herself said to be a loyal member of the Chinese Communist Party.

🇺🇸🇨🇳 America Let Its Military-Industrial Might Wither. China’s Is Booming.
The U.S. won World War II in part by producing more of everything—from bullets to food—than its enemies. One California shipyard in 1942 assembled a supply ship in less than five days. America is no longer capable of that kind of manufacturing feat.
Today, the country that can make the most of almost everything is China. Its products run the gamut from basic chemicals to advanced machinery. With tensions rising between the U.S. and China, the two countries’ industrial capacity is coming into focus as a key battleground in any conflict.

🇳🇬Drone Revolution Transforming African Warfare
Africa's battlefield is evolving as drones increasingly reshape warfare dynamics on the continent. State and non-state actors are leveraging drones for combat and propaganda, narrowing the technological gap between conventional forces and insurgent groups.
The rise in drone usage by militant groups like ISWAP in Nigeria highlights a shift towards more sophisticated tactics. Through drone warfare, these groups have expanded their strategic capabilities.

🇰🇷 As expected, newly elected South Korean President Lee Jae-myung has said hat he intends to soften the hardline North Korea policies of the previous administration.
The Democratic Party candidate was expected to diverge from former President Yoon Suk-yeol’s Korea policies, and one of his first orders of business was to attend a force posture review with top South Korean military decision-makers. The topic of U.S. drawdowns on the Korean Peninsula will likely again be discussed as the Democratic Party has long espoused dialogue over conflict with North Korea. Many South Korean politicians aligned with Lee see a reduction in the U.S. force posture as a worthwhile concession if it smooths relations with North Korea.

🇺🇸 WikiLeaks on X: Palantir is engaged in a major expansion of the American surveillance state
Spyware company Palantir is engaged in large-scale data collection on American citizens, having taken on multiple contracts across Federal Government agencies with large holdings of private information.
A March 2025 Executive Order signed by Trump mandated all Federal Agencies to remove all barriers to intra- and inter-agency sharing of unclassified records. At the same time, the Administration is committing hundreds of millions of dollars to Palantir, a major intelligence contractor whose CEO Alex Karp told an investor call in February 2025: “Palantir is here to disrupt... and, when it’s necessary, to scare our enemies and, on occasion, kill them.”
Palantir's data analytics product 'Foundry' is already installed within four Federal agencies including the Health and Human Services Department and the Department of Homeland Security, with talks under way with other agencies including the IRS. Widespread deployment would give the Administration unprecedented warrantless access to the private records of everyone in the United States, whether they are suspects in a criminal investigation or not.
