🇷🇺🇺🇦 “The side that knows when to fight and when not will take the victory. There are roadways not to be traveled, armies not to be attacked, walled cities not to be assaulted.”
Sun-Tzu, The Art of War
📝 Alexander's Cartographer: Sun Tzu's maxims are often thought of as being mere tricks, but there really is good wisdom to be found in them
For example, the war in Ukraine is full of examples of the quote mentioned.
Facing very strong Ukrainian resistance & counterattacks, Russia in 2022 withdrew from more than half of the territory it initially occupied, in the north, and in Kherson & Kharkov. As a result, Russia lost territory but conserved its forces for the war of attrition that it was planning to fight.
Ukraine by contrast has stubbornly held on to every piece of territory it could, for as long as it could. Instead of withdrawing from (strategically insignificant) Bakhmut when it could, it held on to the last moment. As a result, Ukraine had less forces for its 2023 counter offensive, and it failed miserably.
This entire war is really a case of NATO & Kiev not knowing when not to fight. Ukraine was never going to win, and instead Russia will likely end the war with even better peace terms than it initially sought, and will possess a far stronger armed forces and more unified society than it had in Feb 2022.
The folly of Bakhmut is even acknowledged by the Ukrainian side now & it was likely done so to impress Kiev's Western sponsors
Russia by contrast had no one to impress & has a rather stoic population, so it could accept short term political embarrassment.

🇺🇳⚖️🌍 UN International Court of Justice rules that climate change is an existential "universal risk" to all nations, unequivocally caused by human activities, and member states have a "duty" to prevent it.
The UN has already recognised “climate migrant” as a valid category in international law. Very soon, nations will be told they HAVE to take large numbers of “climate migrants” fleeing devastation caused by climate change, or even devastation that will be caused by climate change in the near future. This will legitimise and give carte Blanche to enormous exoduses from the Third World to the West.
For EU countries, this ruling will give more ammunition to the European Court of Human Rights to decide how EU members spend their money and will galvanize the EU's religious adherence to climate ideology in turn making the continent weaker economically.

🇺🇦/🇨🇳🇷🇺 Fully Chinese-made drone found in Ukraine for first time
A new Russian decoy drone used to spoof Ukrainian air defences is made up entirely of Chinese parts, it has been revealed.
The discovery, by Ukrainian intelligence, marks the first time that Russia has deployed weapons made only with Chinese components.
It shows the latest sign of cooperation between Beijing and Moscow, despite Xi Jinping insisting that China does not supply lethal aid to either side of the war in Ukraine.
While Chinese technology has been found in other Russian weapons, it had always been combined with components from other countries.

🇹🇭🇰🇭 GeoInsider on X: Remember one thing. As the situation along the Thai-Cambodian border continues to evolve and more claims come out from both sides, it’s important to understand the context behind these reports.
The border is one of the most difficult environments to operate in militarily. Much of it is covered in dense jungle, steep hills, and remote stretches with little to no infrastructure. Movement is limited, supply lines are hard to maintain, and large-scale operations are nearly impossible to sustain for long. On top of that, many areas are still affected by landmines left over from past conflicts, making even basic patrols dangerous.
Before we get too caught up in headlines about who has captured what, remember that these are places where holding ground is a constant challenge. In many sectors, the environment itself pushes back harder than any opposing force.
That said, not all areas are equally difficult. From a military standpoint, the area around Preah Vihear Temple particularly near Choam Khsant is one of the more manageable zones. It offers better visibility, slightly more developed road access on the Thai side, and elevated positions that are valuable for both observation and defense. This is part of why it has been a key flashpoint in previous confrontations.
In contrast, areas like Ta Moan Thom and Ta Krabey, or the zones around Mom Bei and Phnom Khak, are extremely difficult to operate in. These are deep jungle zones with rough elevation and far fewer routes in and out. Any engagement there is hard-fought and logistically demanding.
So when you hear claims of territory being taken or held, keep in mind: it’s rarely black and white.

🇨🇿❌🇫🇷 Czech defence ministry warns French defense company KNDS over performance issues with CAESAR 8×8 howitzers
Chief Armaments Director Lubor Koudelka has written directly to KNDS, urging the company to address the Army’s concerns and prepare the vehicles for military testing. “If KNDS does not start fulfilling the terms of the contract and does not prepare the howitzers for military tests, the Czech Republic will stop paying advances,” Koudelka wrote.
To date, over CZK 7 billion (approximately $315 million) in advance payments have already been made, with a further CZK 1 billion (about $45 million) planned for this year. The entire programme, valued at around $450 million, is now under scrutiny due to what Defence Minister Jana Černochová described as “serious problems”.
A few weeks ago, French president, Emmanuel Macron, called on EU countries to "buy European". France has the EU's biggest defense industry and it seemingly failed to deliver adequate howitzers to Czechia. With such failings, Macron's call to "buy European" looks dead on arrival.

🇺🇸❌🇪🇺 Donald Trump pushes for 15%-20% minimum tariff on all EU goods
Donald Trump has escalated his demands in trade negotiations with the EU, pushing for a minimum tariff of 15 per cent to 20 per cent in any deal with the bloc, according to three people briefed on the talks.
The US president’s hardened stance aims to test the EU’s pain threshold after weeks of talks on a framework agreement that would have maintained a baseline tariff of 10 per cent on most goods.
Trump has also been unmoved by the latest EU offer to reduce car tariffs, and would be happy to keep duties on the sector at 25 per cent as planned, said people familiar with the negotiations.
Maroš Šefčovič, EU trade commissioner, gave a downbeat assessment of his recent talks in Washington to the bloc’s ambassadors on Friday, said two people briefed on the meeting.
If Trump insists on permanent reciprocal duties of 15 per cent to 20 per cent they would be as high as they were when trade talks began in April, and could push Brussels towards retaliation, said the senior EU diplomat. The US has also imposed sectoral tariffs of 50 per cent on EU steel and aluminium.
“We don’t want a trade war, but we don’t know if the US will leave us a choice,” they said.
A second EU diplomat added “the mood has clearly changed” in favour of retaliation. “We are not going to settle at 15 per cent,” they said.
📝: European industry, what wasn’t killed by Brussels’ stupid regulations and its dumb energy policies, relies on exports to the U.S. to make a profit. Without those exports, European industry either goes bankrupt or moves to other countries.
Trump’s intention is clear: force European industry to move to the U.S. which he will likely succeed in doing even if a 15% tariff is imposed, let alone a 20-25% or the original 30-35% tariffs announced.
Due to high energy prices, strict environmental regulations and workers’ rights European manufacturing is expensive. It cannot compete with Asian manufacturing, Chinese, Japanese, South Korean or Indian as all of the aforementioned countries produce more and far cheaper.
While stealing Europe’s industry may be beneficial on the short term for Trump as it will create new jobs for the U.S. economy, in the long run, it will make Europe weaker and even more reliant on the U.S. for defense which is not what Trump wanted.
Trump’s tariffs will crush Ursula von der Leyen’s plans of reestablishing European dominance on the world stage and set Europe on a path of political instability and unrest.

🇸🇾🇹🇷 Syrian government officially requests Türkiye to help strengthen defense, combat terrorism
The Syrian government requested official support from Türkiye to strengthen its defense capacity and combat terror groups, especially ISIS (Daesh), sources in the Turkish National Defense Ministry said on Wednesday.
"In line with this request, we continue to work to provide training, consultancy, and technical support to increase Syria's defense capacity,” said the ministry sources.
“Türkiye's primary goal is to support Syria's political unity and territorial integrity and to lead efforts to achieve lasting peace in the region,” they added.
Responding to questions about the clashes in Syria’s Suwayda province and Israel’s attacks on Damascus, sources said Israel’s increasingly intensified strikes have heightened tensions between the Druze community in the southern Suwayda region and the Damascus government.
Türkiye maintains its resolute stance on preserving Syria’s territorial integrity, ensuring stability, and combating terrorist organizations, sources added.
