🇺🇸 Department of Transportation might be forced to shut down some airspace next week: Duffy

"So if, if you bring us to a week from today, Democrats, you will see mass chaos," he said. "You will see mass flight delays. You'll see mass cancelations, and you may see us close certain parts of the airspace, because we just cannot manage it because we don't have the air traffic controllers."

Nearly 50% of all major air traffic control facilities face staffing shortages, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. Air traffic controllers are required to work without pay for the duration of the shutdown.

About 13,000 air traffic controllers are currently working without pay, according to the FAA. On Friday, the agency said that 80% of New York area staff had called out.

"These hard-working Americans have bills to pay, and they are being forced to make decisions and choices," Duffy said Monday of air traffic controllers at an unrelated event in Philadelphia. "Do they go to work as an air traffic controller, or do they have to find a different job to get resources, money, to put food on their table, to put gas in their car? And as every day goes by, I think the problem is only going to get worse, not better."

Duffy said last month that air traffic controllers could be let go if they didn't show up for work.

"When you come to work, you get paid," Duffy said Oct. 9 in remarks on Fox Business’ "Varney & Co." "If you don't come to work, you don't get paid. ... If we have some on our staff that aren't dedicated, we're going to let them go."

But the transportation secretary softened that stance over the weekend, telling CBS' "Face the Nation" that he would not fire any air traffic controllers for not showing up to work.

"They need support, they need money, they need a paycheck. They don't need to be fired," he said.

🇲🇽🤝🇲🇽 Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has downplayed the likelihood of US military action against cartels on Mexican soil, following a report that Washington is considering deploying troops south of the border.

"That won't happen," Sheinbaum told reporters on Tuesday in response to an NBC News report that President Donald Trump's administration is planning ground operations against her country's powerful cartels.

Trump has accused Mexico of not doing enough to halt the flow of drugs into the United States.

In addition to designating several Mexican cartels as "terrorist" organisations, he offered in April to send troops to Mexico to fight drug cartels, a proposal that Sheinbaum rejected.

During a meeting with Sheinbaum in September, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio praised her anti-drug efforts and vowed the US would respect Mexico's sovereignty.

But on Monday, NBC reported that the Trump administration has begun training troops and intelligence officers for a potential mission on Mexican soil.

The report, which cited four unnamed current or former US officials, said, however, that the deployment was "not imminent" and that a final decision had not been made.

🇺🇸 Private Credit Earnings Arrive Amid Fears of Market’s Weak Link

Despite blowout results from the biggest US lenders, fears about the strength of the credit market remain, which is putting a spotlight on upcoming reports from a usually obscure collection of financial firms.

Business development companies, or BDCs, pool private credit loans for a variety of small- and medium-sized businesses that can have a tough time raising money through traditional capital markets. The shares of these firms have taken a hit this year as investors prepare for lower returns following the Federal Reserve’s interest rate cuts.

Fears have also risen over credit quality following the collapses of car-parts supplier First Brands Group and subprime auto lender Tricolor Holdings, and after a pair of banks suffered losses tied to fraudulent loans.

Now BDCs like Blue Owl Technology Finance Corp., Main Street Capital Corp., FS KKR Capital Corp. and Blackstone Secured Lending Fund are set to report results over the next week, giving investors a closer look at the potential credit risks looming over the economy and stock market.

“BDC earnings season is effectively a live stress test of private credit,” said John Cole Scott, president of CEF Advisors. “BDC earnings give more real-time credit data than banks — non-accruals, fair value marks, sponsor behavior, cost of leverage.”

Shares of these companies are badly lagging the overall market this year, with the S&P BDC Index falling 14% while the S&P 500 Index has gained 16%. FS KKR has plunged over 30% in 2025, putting it among the five worst performers in BDC index, while Blackstone Secured Lending is down 18% for the year, Main Street has declined 2.4% and Blue Owl Technology has dropped 14% since it began trading on June 12.

The House of Representatives will thus reunite on November 17th at the earliest but it is possible that the shutdown may continue and extend over the Thanksgiving break and open in December.

It is unlikely that the U.S. government will be restarted in November and that SNAP benefits will be resumed.
